Four years ago (2021)
The Creston Community School Board is inching toward finalizing a plan to update district facilities now that two proposals and a few alternate conception drawings have surfaced from facility advisory committees – consisting of district staff, students and community members – during a board work session Tuesday.
All-State football teams were released shortly after midnight on Tuesday for all seven classes of high school football. A trio of players from the Creston News Advertiser coverage area made the second team of their respective classes. Offensive linemen Avery Fuller of Creston and Hernan Castor of Lenox both helped pave the way for over 2,900 yards of offense for their respective teams. Caelen DeVault, a senior defensive back from Nodaway Valley, also made the second team. Grundman, a junior running back at Lenox, Derek Paup, a defensive lineman from Creston, Avery Phillippi, a defensive lineman from Nodaway Valley, and Brycen Wookey of Murray made the third team.
Friday’s announcement by the Food and Drug Administration to open up COVID-19 boosters to everyone 18 and older coincided with Union County’s growing number of COVID-19 cases by the week. During the Union County Board of Supervisors meeting Monday, county public health director Zach Woods said another 66 new cases were reported last week as the county hit the 14% seven-day positivity rate. As of Nov. 16, Woods said the state’s rate was 10.2%.
Eight years ago (2017)
The Board of Supervisors denied a request to hold prayers in the courthouse after County Attorney Tim Kenyon looked over the request and gave them his recommendation. Kenyon advised the board to deny any requests of that nature until an official policy has been made. Creating a building and grounds policy would allow the board to hold any request up against the policy to see if it qualifies as permissible or not.
Ten days appears to have made a whirlwind of difference for the Panther girls basketball team as they beat Winterset 49-44 Monday night in Mel Penrod gymnasium. After only four Creston players made the score sheet against Des Moines Christian, seven ended up contributing in the Panthers 49 point outing.
East Union’s Olivia Eckels celebrates the end of her senior year of volleyball as an honorable mention all-state selection as handed out by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association on Tuesday.
14 years ago (2011)
DeBruce Grain Inc. of Creston recently sold its bean plant operation to CHS Inc. — a leading energy, grains and foods company based in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. DeBruce officials said Wednesday “it’s been a real easy transition” so far for the 32 employees at the Creston facility, and no jobs will be lost during the process.
Senior Iowa State recruit Collin Bevins moved up from second-team status a year ago to the first-team defensive line on the Class 3A all-state football team selected by the Iowa Newspaper Association’s panel of sportswriters. Former fullback Keaton Hulett, who moved inside to the left guard position on offense, was named to the INA’s second-team offensive line in Class 3A. Luke Neitzel, the versatile junior quarterback who played running back a year ago, earned second-team all-state honors in the defensive secondary.
The Union County supervisors voted 3-2 Nov. 14 to officially move from a five- to three-district county, a change supported by 70.1% of voters during last November’s election. During this final process, another discussion surfaced regarding whether we, as one of the smaller counties in Iowa, really need districts at all or would the county be better served by electing supervisors on an at-large basis.

An early shot heard ‘round the Iowa wrestling world was fired by Class 1A power Interstate 35 Tuesday night. The sixth-ranked Roadrunners ended Creston/O-M’s winning streak at 40 matches, dating back to 2005, with a 36-27 victory over the Panthers in double dual action. The top-ranked Panthers won six of the 14 matches against the balanced Roadrunners.
Both Creston bowling teams picked up wins over Clarke of Osceola Saturday at Panther Lanes. On the girls side, Kayla Davidson led the Panthers with a two-game total of 441 to take a 2,355-1,564 victory. James Norris led the Creston boys team with a two-game total of 428 to help his team to a 2,495-2,087 win.
