East Union junior Jacob Driskill is heading to the state cross country meet with a time of 18:13.60 that placed him seventh at a meet hosted by Southwest Valley at Lake Icaria.
The 2022 cross country season came to a close for Creston on Wednesday at the Class 3A State Qualifying Meet, and eight senior varsity runners ended their careers for the Panthers.
After opening the application process for a transportation director, Creston Community School District Superintendent Deron Stender said they only received two inquiries and one internal applicant. The Creston School Board voted unanimously Monday to approve sharing a transportation director with East Union and Murray. This isn’t the first time the position has been shared. Stender said in the past, they have shared with Orient-Macksburg.
Southwestern Community College announced Wednesday Taylor Shipley will serve as interim head coach for the Spartan volleyball program for the remainder of the season. Shipley replaces Anna Humburg, who had been at the helm of the Spartan volleyball program since summer.
Creston High School won’t be the only entity with an organized football team in town. The Southern Iowa Aztecs will take the field in March. “It got started with some semi-pro stuff last year,” said team organizer Cody Robb. “Some Creston guys met with a team in Leon and played a couple of games last year. They liked the idea for guys just out of high school playing ball again.”

In order to focus on the essential skills students need to master through fifth grade, the Creston Community Elementary School report cards will have a new look. CCES principal Julie Plant spoke at the Monday board meeting of the change to report cards, saying the new wording is due to the district’s decision to identify the essential standards for each grade level. Students will receive a descriptive grade rather than the traditional A through F.
Lonny Dean Miller, MD, FAAFP, a family physician in Creston, has achieved the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the national medical association representing nearly 134,600 family physicians, residents and medical students. The degree was conferred on more than 250 family physicians during a convocation Sept. 27, in conjunction with the AAFP’s annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Green Valley State Park held the first of what could be an annual trick or treat event Saturday in the campgrounds. Park ranger Jason Hyde, a 2002 Creston graduate in his first year at Green Valley, said he held similar events at Viking Lake and Lewis and Clark State Park, which drew around 200 cars. He estimated there were around 500 cars Saturday at Green Valley.
Three weeks ago, Creston’s Braelyn Baker separated herself from Harlan’s Lucy Borkowski in the final 300 meters of the final hill at Crestmoor Golf Club to win the Creston Invitational cross country race. On Thursday, Baker made her move much earlier to win the Hawkeye 10 girls championship on the same course. Baker won in a time of 19:29.65 for a 33-second margin over Borkowski in second place.

Reducing property taxes and upgrading street conditions are the primary focuses of Gary Lybarger — running for at-large councilperson on Creston City Council during this year’s general election slated Nov. 5. Lybarger is running against Courtney Wilson, Kevin Downey and incumbent Paul Vandevender.
Creston finished second in its pool and lost to eventual runner-up Red Oak in the semifinals of the Winterset Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The Panthers posted wins over Dallas Center-Grimes and Hampton-Dumont and lost in straight sets to tournament champion Nevada in Pool B. By finishing second, Creston faced Red Oak from Pool A in the semifinals and the Tigers were victorious, 25-22, 25-18.
A whole host of Panther seniors stepped up to lead Creston/Orient-Macksburg past Winterset, 32-20, here Friday on senior night. Just four minutes into the game, a pair of Panther seniors connected for the team’s first score when Brandon Phipps hit Maxx Walters for a 28-yard touchdown.
Cooper McDermott became just the second Hawkeye 10 Conference individual champion in Creston cross country history Thursday, as he dominated his way to the win. Just prior to McDermott’s race, junior Maria Mostek made a charge in the second half of the girls varsity 4K, coming up just short of winning the individual girls crown in second place.
