Last month the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union hosted its inaugural Student Athletic Advisory Committee designed to discuss all things with girls high school athletics. The 11-member grouping includes Creston high school junior Sydney Hartsock, who participates in basketball, cross country and golf.
Volunteers and community leaders in Creston are planting 10 trees to replace those damaged in the 2012 tornado and other woodland health issues, such as emerald ash borer. The local effort is a partnership through Alliant Energy and Trees Forever’s Branching Out program.
Tom and Jerrie Henderson and family were awarded recognition Aug. 16 for their Century Farm at the lowa State Fair. The farm was purchased Feb. 28, 1918, by Richard and Rose Eivins for $192.50/acre in Adams County, near the Adams-Union County line near Kent.
Whenever Josh Porter walks into a Creston athletic event, he knows what he’s going to see. The Clarinda High School athletic director knows he’s going to be greeted by a fixture at Creston Community High School activities. “Anytime I walk into Creston schools for an event, Jeff Bevins is there,” Porter said. “He asks how things are going in Clarinda. He is a great representative of the Hawkeye 10 and we are lucky to have his experience and knowledge. ”Now in his 19th year as an athletic administrator, including the last 14 as director of middle school and high school activities in Creston, Bevins was recognized Oct. 3 as Southwest Iowa Athletic Director of the Year.

Creston/O-M celebrated senior night in a big way Friday with a 54-6 victory over Glenwood. The Panthers are assured of hosting the first round of the playoffs as one of the top two teams in District 1 after Carroll suffered its second loss Friday.
Chocolate and reading go together, at least, they will for one day. The Chocolate Friends-y Walk is the new featured event in Creston for National Friends of the Library Week, Sunday through Oct. 22. “I went to the National Main Street conference in Des Moines in May, and that was one of the promotion ideas they talked about,” said Dianne Osmun, vice president of Friends of the Library board. “So, we adapted it to us.”
The final enrollment headcount at Southwestern Community College for this fall is 1,762. This is slightly higher than the 1,753 headcount for the fall of 2010. While gains were made in headcount, there was a slight decrease in credit hours, which includes online credit hours. This fall’s credit hours are 17,709.5, while last year’s were 17,797.50.
Creston girls finished fourth and the injury-plagued boys were eighth at the Hawkeye 10 Conference cross country meet Thursday at Swan Lake State Park near Carroll. Maria Mostek was runner-up to Atlantic’s Ali Krogman in the girls race and teammate Emily Wignall was 10th to earn all-conference honors.

There’s an old saying in college football: “Where there’s a victory, there’s fans rushing the field.” OK, maybe it’s not a saying. But the sight has become a staple on SportsCenter and college fields across America. Sometimes it’s warranted, other times it seems laughable. As Creston native Zack Hood and the rest of his Kansas teammates rushed the field after Saturday night’s game, one thing was certain -- the 31-28 victory over Kansas State was worthy of a raucous celebration.
A 75-yard kickoff return by Lenox’s Chris Sweeney to start Friday’s game against Grandview Park Baptist was just the beginning. Lenox went on to score 40 unanswered points, rolling to a 64-7 victory. The victory improved Lenox to 6-0 overall.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Creston/Orient-Macksburg believed it had a legitimate shot at reaching the UNI Dome, home to the high school football finals. Instead, the Panthers have lost four straight games, the last three by a combined 13 points. In Friday’s loss to Glenwood, Creston/O-M had more first downs, 19 compared to nine, and more total offense, 301 to 269, but lost 17-10. “Last I checked, the scoreboard decides the winner, not statistics,” said Creston/O-M head coach Dick Bergstrom.
