Mount Ayr girls took fourth place and Southwest Valley’s girls took fifth place as a team at Clarke’s cross country meet Tuesday. The Raiderette and Timberwolve girls were the only two area teams to place, scoring 100 and 126 points, respectively.
Creston cross country took a sixth-place girls finish behind a bevy of ranked Class 3A and Class 4A teams at the Knoxville Invitational Tuesday. Heading to Knoxville’s meet for the first time with so many ranked runners and teams, the Panthers saw “a step up in competition in a big way” as the season starts to wind down. Creston’s girls scored 191 points, behind Marshalltown’s 150 point fifth-place finish.
Forty-one years of law enforcement will come to an end as Sergeant Pat Henry clocks out for the final time 4 p.m. Wednesday, after joining the Creston Police Department 30 years ago Oct. 1, 1990. Henry said he is looking forward to not punching that clock as he continues working his side businesses of moving and tree and shrub trimming. He also hopes to spend more time with the model trains at the Restored Depot. Seeing more of his 13 grandchildren is also at the top of his list.
A large group of volunteers took a few hours out of their own harvest efforts Sept. 30 to harvest 70 acres of soybeans that were planted this spring as part of the 16th annual Fields of Faith mission growing project. Dennis Lundy owns and operates the land, which is donated to the project. Also donated is the time, the seed and chemicals. Farmers ran five combines through the fields on a windy last day of September, harvesting the grain. Trucks, tractors and wagons helped the effort, taking it to the local cooperative.

Creston senior Cooper McDermott picked up his second meet victory of the season Thursday at the Leon Fox Invitational. McDermott, ranked ninth in Class 3A in the latest set of rankings released Tuesday, knocked off eighth-ranked Curtis Harryman of Winterset in the closing meters of the race for the victory. The Creston boys finished seventh out of 13 teams in the meet, while the Panther girls finished fifth out of 12 teams in a strong field.
Union County’s tax levy dropped again for the 2015-16 fiscal year. The county is now ranked fifth in the state of Iowa for highest tax levy, but this is the third drop since holding the highest county tax levy in the state in the 2012-13 fiscal year.
The Creston girls cross country edged out Class 1A fifth-ranked Panorama by eight points Monday to win its third straight team title at the Orient-Macksburg Invite. Creston scored 59 points to finish ahead of Panorama’s 67 points.
15 years ago (2010)
Former Graceland University standout athlete Darrell Frain will be inducted into the university’s athletic Hall of Fame Saturday. The induction ceremony for Frain, longtime teacher and coach at Creston High School, will be held 1 p.m. at the Bruce Jenner Sports Complex.
The Creston cross country teams thought they were getting a preview of the course they would run in the postseason at a meet in Perry Thursday night. That wasn’t the case, as the Panthers learned their postseason fate earlier in the day. Creston will make the trip to Denison-Schleswig for a Class 3A District/Regional meet.
During Panthers’ Homecoming festivities Friday, Dana Gordon, daughter of Don and Joan Gordon, was crowned Creston High School 2010 Homecoming queen. Distinguished faculty member Catherine Mueller, alumni Betty Chapman (class of 1960) and Jeff Hundley (class of 1980) were inducted in the Creston Hall of Fame.
20 years ago (2005)
Third-ranked Denison-Schleswig had two shots left at the end zone. Third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, 20.9 seconds remaining and no timeouts. Creston/O-M, having played a near flawless first half in taking a 13-0 lead, was desperately trying to hold on to its 13-7 advantage. In the end, Denison-Schleswig had slipped to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the district. Creston/O-M improved to 3-1 and 2-0.
The Corning boys and girls cross country teams garnered their first double-win since districts in 2003. Both teams rolled to victory with comfortable margins. The Corning girls outpaced second-place Wayne, 47-80. The boys triumphed over the next closest team, Albia, 50-85.
The Murray volleyball team remains undefeated in the Bluegrass Conference with a three-game sweep over Lineville-Clio, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-19. The Lady Mustangs now stand at 4-0 in conference and 8-3 overall.
