Throwback Thursday: 1997 Relay for Life raises nearly $10,000

*Creston High School students sophomore Michelle Vertanen, junior Jessie Davis and senior Amanda James join in prayer outside the high school this morning. About 35 students read Bible verses and prayed as part of “See you at the Pole,” an annual event where students pray at their school flag-pole before school begins.

State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald traveled to Creston Sept. 11 to meet with the Creston Area Retired School Personnel. While meeting with CARSPA, Fitzgerald discussed his responsibilities as treasurer and specifically focused on his involvement with IPERS.

Creston’s girls cross country squad was ready to go on a picture perfect day at Lake Orient and easily took home winning honors as a unit, besting seven other complete area teams. The victory marked the Panther girls’ fourth straight team win at Lake Orient, with those races coming over the last five years as weather caused last year’s race to be cancelled.

Max Duggan and Joshua Simmons showcased why across the state few duos compare as the two hooked up for four passing touchdowns in Lewis Central’s 56-7 victory over Creston/Orient-Macksburg during the Panthers’ homecoming game.

Progress continues to be made on Creston Community School District’s various construction projects, CCSD Superintendent Steve McDermott reported to the Board of Directors during a regular meeting. According to McDermott, another pour was completed on the new parking lot at the elementary/middle school building last week.

Creston/O-M junior quarterback Luke Neitzel passed for four touchdowns and ran for another in the first half of the Panthers’ 48-0 homecoming victory over Red Oak Friday night. The Panthers improved to 4-1 on the season and remained tied with Carroll on top of the Class 3A District 1 standings with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Mallory Griffith was named Creston homecoming queen. She is the daughter of Scott and Jolene Griffith. Scott Finn, Dennis Purdum, Chuck Eilers and the late Jean Crane were inducted into the Creston Community Schools Hall of Fame.

Two former Creston natives are bringing their talents back to town. Joy Johnson, author of “The BOOB Girls: The Burned Out Old Broads at Table 12,” and Colleen Kelley Hartman, author of “My Grandma Calls Me Lovey,” will be doing a book signing at The Bookstore 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Johnson and Hartman both graduated from Creston High School in 1956.

28 years ago (1997)

In a surprise announcement at Tuesday’s regular city council meeting, Mayor Larry Wynn said the city received a petition with 220 signatures asking for the question to be put on the Nov. 4 municipal election ballot to change the makeup of the library board from mayoral appointments to elected positions.

It’s time to put your money where your mouth is. In much more polite terms, that’s what Creston Public Works Director Tom Myers told the Creston City Council at Tuesday’s regular council meeting. Frustrated over continual complaints about road conditions and lack of action by the council to fund road projects, Myers said its time to get busy.

Creston ran into a strong Red Oak volleyball team Tuesday night and it showed on the scoreboard as the Tigers won 15-4, 15-6 and 15-2. The Panthers were led by Jessica Moeller and Casee Piel at the net. Moeller had three kills and two blocks, while Piel had two kills and three blocks.

The third annual Union County four-hour Relay for Life held Sunday afternoon at Creston High School raised $9,800 for local, state and national American Cancer Society programs’, exceeding the 1996 total by $3,700.

56 years ago (1969)

A big parade, second in size only to the huge Crestennial parade in July among those held in Creston in many years, was a highlight Saturday night of the 91st annual Iowa Fireman’s Association Convention here. There were 75 units in the parade which drew a large crowd of people to the business district to line the streets of the parade route.

Did you hear the sound of 130 feet swishing though the tall grass one morning last week? A centipede taking its morning exercise? No, it was the 64-member CHS marching band preparing for their next show. The band made their ’69 debut at the first home football game Sept, 5 under the direction of Mr. David Rissler and drum major Ted Francis.

Plans for a nine-hole golf course to be called Three-Mile Golf Club and located just north of Afton, will be discussed Thursday evening at the Town Hall in Afton.

Frank Ide, starting his third year as a member of the Creston Community School District Board of Education, Monday evening was elected president of the board for the coming year. He succeeds Joe Foley who is concluding service on the board after nine years.
