Guthrie, Rusk join library board

Steve Guthrie and Sue Rusk have both joined the Gibson Memorial Library Board of Trustees.

After losing two board members, one to retirement and one to a move, the Gibson Memorial Library Board of Trustees is back to its full numbers with the introduction of Steve Guthrie and Sue Rusk.

Guthrie, who will serve as a city representative, is the general manager of Creston Waterworks. It’s because of this he first saw the board opening.

“I found out about the position through the city website,” Guthrie said. “I’m involved with the city through the waterworks, and I used to be on the library board of trustees in another community, so I thought this was another way to get involved.”

An avid reader, Guthrie said he wanted to find another way to be involved in the Creston community.

“From previous experiences, I know libraries are a great place to create a sense of community and [I want to] hopefully continue that,” Guthrie said.

Guthrie’s favorite book series is the 14-volume high fantasy “The Wheel of Time” by Robert Jordan.

Rusk, who will serve as a county representative, is a retired school librarian, serving as East Union’s librarian for 35 years.

A constant patron of the library, Rusk said she applied for the board after being encouraged by Assistant Director Jordan Foote. She was thrilled for the opportunity.

“I’ve been a customer here for a long time,” Rusk said. “Living in Afton, I feel like Afton needs to be more involved over here than it is because there’s no public library in Afton. That’s kind of my underlying goal.”

Rusk’s favorite book is “Be True to Your School” by Bob Greene.

“It’s a diary from 1964 based on Bob Greene’s life, who used to be a columnist with the Chicago Tribune,” Rusk said. “It’s hilarious; it’s funny. It’s for adults and high school kids. I never had a kid who didn’t like it.”

Rusk will finish the term left by previous county representative Alyssa Love, with the term expiring July 1, 2028. Guthrie is starting a new term after the retirement of board member Cindy Gomis. Guthrie’s term expires July 1, 2031.
