Throwback Thursday: Kenyon named president of Iowa State Bar Association

Since 1904, no one has represented the nine-county Judicial District 5B as president of the Iowa State Bar Association – until now. Creston native Arnold “Skip” Kenyon was recently appointed president. Skip becomes the first person in more than a century from District 5B to reign as president and the first person ever from Union County to hold the honor.

Five senior division acts (ages 13-21) have advanced to the semi-final round in Bill Riley’s 57th annual Iowa State Fair Talent Search. The clog trio of Haylea England, 17, of Mount Ayr, Emily Robinson, 17, of Creston and Sadie Marnin, 16, of Greenfield, will perform in the semifinals at noon Saturday.

Shooters now have another option at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance shooting range – a new skeet field, which will be usable as early as next week. “You can shoot pistols and long rifles and .22s and muzzleloaders, and then you can go down and shoot trap at 16 yards all the way back to 27 yards, and now you can shoot another form of entertainment, skeet, and it’s real popular,” said Tom Lesan, High Lakes Outdoor Alliance treasurer.

Korina Loudon of the Bluegrass Board of Realtors has earned a silver Individual Achievement Award from the Iowa Association of Realtors. Loudon is broker/owner of Green Valley Realty and Green Valley Property Management.

Garden and Associates, a civil engineering company with headquarters in Oskaloosa, has recently opened for business and is sharing office space at 500 E. Taylor St.

By popular demand, Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s ReRun Shop has expanded its hours of business. ReRun Shop volunteer Pat Pokorny said the popularity of the preowned items shop, combined with an overabundance of merchandise, has called for volunteers to keep the business open an extra day each week.

One seat on Creston Community School District’s board of directors is open, and two men are running for the position: incumbent Bob Deranleau and Kevin Downey.

36 years ago (1989)

Scott Howarth and Terry Horning of Creston edged the Grant City, Missouri, team of Chuch Downey and Herb Van Vactor in the Crestmoor Two-Man Best Shot Tournament last weekend. Howarth sank a 30-foot eagle putt on No. 4 to decide the championship after both teams shot 127 in regular play.

Three Creston players were named to the first team and three others earned honorable mention in the All-Southwest Iowa baseball selections by the Council Bluffs Nonpareil. First-teamers were first baseman Scott Driskell, shortstop Scott Belger and pitcher Chad Good, all juniors. Senior catcher Chad Hightshoe, freshman infielder Kurt Belger and junior outfielder Brian Perkins were honorable mentions.

Kristen Spriggs, 10, and Carrie Pendegraft, 11, of Creston, will present a dance act in Bill Riley’s 30th annual Talent Sprout competition at the Iowa State Fair Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The first retreat for divorced and widowed people held last weekend at Southwestern Community College drew 41 people from the surrounding area and as far away as Des Moines, Ankeny, Villisca and Chariton.

Meggan Kramer, O-M softballs’s pitcher with 112 career victories in 136 decisions, not only made first team in the Council Bluffs Nonpareil All-Southwest Iowa softball team, she was also chosen as Southwest Iowa Player of the Year.

72 years ago (1953)

Gene Hertz, who has been principal and assistant athletic coach at the Fontanelle High School for three years, has been employed as a high school science teacher in Creston. He also will be the assistant football and basketball coach and head track coach for Creston High School.

It’s fair week in Union County with the opening of the 29th annual Union County Fair at the new fairgrounds in Afton today. It is the first Union County Fair held in Afton.

Mrs. Fern Hamilton will open a lunch room at 216 N. Maple St., just north of the S & L Store in Creston, Friday, she announced today. Mrs. Hamilton recently purchased the cafe, which has been closed for several weeks.

Breeze Gas advertises a gas war with 21.9-cent tax paid gas plus free gifts or Thrifty Gift Stamps with each purchase. The station, managed by Bob Deacon, is located at Highway 34 and Elm Street in Creston.
