Crushing cancer in every color

Annual fundraiser runs Saturday

Crush Cancer in Every Color will be held this Saturday, with all proceeds going to the Greater Regional Infusion and Oncology Center. Last year's color run will now be a glow run.

This Saturday, Creston’s annual Crush Cancer in Every Color fundraiser will be hosted for the fourth year in a row by Greater Regional Health, with all proceeds benefiting the Greater Regional Infusion and Oncology Center. Previous iterations were hosted in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.

Following last year’s example, the event will continue hosting their run/walk at the end of the day rather than the beginning.

The day starts with a disc golf tournament at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9 a.m. The event will hold two brackets, recreational and advanced. Participants must bring their own disc. The cost is $40 per team.

Also at 10 a.m. is the vendor fair, running until 2 p.m. Attendees can enter to win a variety of raffle baskets, which will be awarded during the car show.

From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the Cancer Sucks Car Show will be hosted around the bear statue. No preregistration is needed. A $10 donation vehicle entry fee is taken upon arrival. During the show, a 50/50 raffle and live auction will take place.

Following the car show is Cruise for a Cure. At 3 p.m., a pilot car will lead the cruise out to Green Valley Park and back to McKinley, with an estimated time duration of 40 minutes.

Also at 3 p.m. begins a series of kid- and family-friendly events, including a bounce house, obstacle course and water slide. Back from last year will be a dunk tank, rock painting, temporary tattoos and more. These will be open to the public until 7:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m. the annual bags tournament will begin. No preregistration is required, with day-of registration beginning at 3:30 p.m. To compete, there must be two people to a team, with a $40 cost per team.

Also starting at 4 p.m. is the Spotlight School of Dance’s Southwest Tumble Fest. Hosted at the bandshell, the public can enjoy performances by various Spotlight students, including a debut by the Rainbow Ribbons Rise Preschool and the Crown solo and duet exhibitions.

The survivor recognition ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. For more information on this year’s honored survivors, check out the Crush Cancer tab in today’s paper.

Following the ceremony will be the glow run/walk. Though it’s too late for preregistration, those interested in participating in the run/walk can do day-of registration for a cost of $25. The route is a one-mile loop that starts and ends near the bear statue. Attendees are welcome to do one lap or three laps to complete a 5K.

Those in the run/walk can also compete in the glow competition. Those dressed up in their brightest gear could win a prize in different categories. The Littlest Glower for ages 12 and under can win a $20 Pizza Ranch arcade card. Ages 13 and up can compete for the Brightest Glower to win a $25 El Guero gift certificate, located in Lenox. The Brightest Family, which must be made up of at least one adult and one child, can win two adult and two child tickets to the Henry Doorly Zoo.

Funds raised at Creston's Crush Cancer in Every Color benefit the Greater Regional Cancer & Infusion Center.

The luminaria ceremony and glow party will take place at 9 p.m. Participants can decorate a luminaria and recognize a loved one Friday, Aug. 1 between 5 and 7 p.m. at PCSB Bank or during the evening of Crush Cancer in Every Color at McKinley Park. A $5 free-will donation is suggested per luminaria bag.

Throughout the day, a number of food trucks will be available. Reno & Woody’s, Westin’s Lemonade and Tacos Far West will be available for lunch, while the Crush Cancer Committee will host a pizza supper. A free-will donation will be available for the evening meal.
