A handful of area players have earned all-state honors by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. The teams were released Thursday. Creston secured two spots on the Class 4A all-state teams. Taylor Briley earned placement on the second team for a banner year. Alli Thomsen’s tremendous improvement helped her earn a spot on the team.
Exhaustion. Joy. Stress. All of these and more were felt by the approximate 200 community volunteers who helped accommodate the rolling city of 20,000 for an overnight stay in Creston Monday as part of the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. And, add one more — relief. It’s all over, until next time.
Tractor Supply Company, the largest chain of rural lifestyle retail stores in the United States, will open the doors to its new Creston location mid-August. The Creston location will be located on Highway 34 in the building that was formerly Walmart. TSC is planning for a soft opening Aug. 13, with a grand opening celebration Aug. 20. The Creston location will occupy approximately 22,300 square feet, compared to the typical 16,000 of other TSC stores. The new store will employ 12 to 17 full- and part-time team members.

It could have been a big Lenox letdown. Instead, the Tigers turned their disappointment into a state championship. Lenox scored five times in the top of the eighth inning after giving up the tying run in the seventh and beat Fenton Sentral 10-5 in steamy weather Saturday to win the Class 1A baseball title.
The Pride of Iowa baseball and softball, along with the Rolling Hills Conference softball All-Conference teams, have been released. Lenox tied for most selections on the 2006 All-Pride of Iowa Conference Baseball teams. Lenox catcher Kalab Evans and pitcher Jake Samo, along with Mount Ayr pitcher Lance Brown, were unanimous first-team selections. Pitcher Zach Kohlhoff of Corning, outfielder Alex Peterson of Lenox, infielder Cody Sobotka of Mount Ayr and infielder Nick Brown of Nodaway Valley were also first-team selections.
Only one race remains before the chase for the championship begins for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at the Adams County Speedway. Karl Ritterbusch and Ryan Vicker each took their fourth wins of the season, Jeremy Tibben got his second and Ron Ballinger scored his first of the season.

Creston advanced to the regional tournament and earned a high seed by winning the district title Tuesday night, 4-0, over Clarinda. Katie Turner and Sara Harris combined with a fine pitching performance. Turner improved her record to 165-6 with four shutout innings.
Jeff Longstaff, R. Ph., of Creston was named to the President’s Club at the recent national annual meeting of Medicap Pharmacies Inc. This award is granted to Medicap Pharmacy franchisees who have displayed outstanding sales performance over the past year.
Lisa Wallig is the recipient of the second quarter Creston Publishing Co. Pro Award. The award is given for outstanding performance, excellent customer service skills, productive interaction with co-workers and a positive, professional attitude.
Union County took the first step toward complying with state regulations on emergency management by establishing a formal commission this week. Creston Fire Chief Roger Nurnberg was appointed acting emergency management coordinator for the county.

Jill Cooper, 18-year-old daughter of Blake and Phillis Cooper of Prescott, was crowned 1986 Adams County Fair Queen in ceremonies Sunday night.
Senior division winner in the Bill Riley Talent Show held Sunday night at the Adams County Fair in Corning was a vocal duet, “Nobody Loves Like You Do,” by Paula Vogal and Mike Price of Creston.
The 1986 Orient Pumpkin Days parade grand marshals, honored for their community service, were Alice Higgins and Velma Nelson.
For the second year in a row, Kristen Bauman, daughter of Dick and Helen Bauman of Creston, has been named Grand Champion Drum Major at Marching Auxiliary Camp.
Debbie Davis, daughter of Jack and Cheri Davis of Creston, is currently performing with the Summer Repertory Theatre Company at the University of Northern Iowa. Davis was cast as Antoinette in “A Flea in Her Ear” and will appear as a dancer and a chorus member in “The King and I.”
