Hunt for treasure with the library

Some of the baskets available to win by raffle for the library's treasure hunt are on display.

The wine walk is out, with Gibson Memorial’s Library Legacy Committee trying something new this year. In order to lower costs and increase attendance, a family-friendly treasure hunt throughout Creston will be the library’s annual fundraiser.

While well loved, committee members found the wine walk to be inaccessible for many library-goers.

“This can be for all ages, so if you have a family that wants to participate, everyone can work together on that,” Director Danielle Dickinson Thaden said. “It’s not limited to folks who drink because there’s none of that involved. We’re trying something new and we hope it goes really well.”

Held Aug. 1 and 2, the treasure hunt will include photos from 20 businesses around Creston. Participants will receive a booklet filled with photos of items in each business.

“The way it works is, there are different businesses involved that are sending a picture of something in their business that will be featured in a treasure hunt booklet,” Dickinson Thaden said. “Think the treasure hunt sheet, but they have to tell us where each of these items can be found. And for each of their correct answers, they will get a raffle ticket.”

Booklets will be handed out from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at the library. In order to receive raffle tickets for correct answers, booklets must be returned by 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Participants can enjoy walking tacos in the library pavilion from 4 to 5 p.m. following the treasure hunt Saturday, with raffle basket drawing beginning at 5 p.m.

With more than 25 baskets to draw for, participants could win a Magical Mystery Read and Relax basket, a s’more kit or even gear for your favorite team. Additional raffle tickets are available for purchase, at a rate of $5 for one ticket, $10 for three tickets or $20 for eight tickets.

A ticket must be purchased in order to participate. An individual ticket, which includes the booklet, five raffle tickets and dinner, costs $25. A four-person group ticket, which includes 20 raffle tickets, one booklet for the group and dinner, costs $80. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time and day of.

Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing a sound system and heaters for the library pavilion.

Participating in the treasure hunt are Adams Street Espresso, Beggin’ for an Eggin’, Big Acai, Coen’s, Creston Chamber of Commerce, Crystalized Visions, Eagle’s, EveryStep, Feel Better Training, Greens n Things, Hazel Marie’s, Kilgore’s, Latest Edition Bookstore, Northwest Bank (Adams Street location), Radiant Wellness, Real Estate Store, R Realty, Vernie’s Drapery Shop, Wishing Well and UCDA.
