Union County Board of Supervisors announces the recycle bins will no longer be available at the Creston Fareway location beginning July 1. Recycling bins for rural Union County residents will be located at the Waste Management Facility.
One of uptown Creston’s restaurants, A & G Pizza Steakhouse and Lounge, will soon pass into the hands of new ownership. A & G, which has been in the Groumoutis family and Creston’s culinary community for more than 40 years, will be taken over July 5 by Jake and Britni Kawa, both previous longtime residents.
What is there to expect of a team that has dominated in Hawkeye 10 play for weeks on end now? Another doubleheader sweep in conference play of course. The Creston softball team traveled to Atlantic for a Thursday night pair of games and came away with wins by scores of 6-1 and 9-5.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa has announced funding recipients for this year’s grant program. The Learning Center of Southwest Iowa located in Creston has received $3,200 for the curriculum expansion for the Behavioral Health Intervention Services program.
For the first time, a Southwestern Community College technical student has placed first in the nation at the 2016 SkillsUSA competition. Daniel Leonard of Mount Ayr earned the gold medal in the electrical construction wiring category at the national championship, which was held June 20-24 in Louisville, Kentucky. Further, Leonard was the highest scorer ever in electrical wiring at SkillsUSA nationals.

The Creston softball team had the highs and lows of a season all in one day -- losing an 8-5 game to Lenox, where the Panthers gave up five runs in the seventh inning, and a 3-2 win over Class 1A No.7 Murray.
Trevor Conner hit two solo home runs and struck out 13 on the mound, and Dane Wardenburg’s solo blast provided the winning run in the seventh inning in a 3-2 Creston victory over Atlantic Thursday. Avenging an early-season 13-10 loss to the Trojans, Creston pulled even in the Hawkeye 10 Conference at 6-6 (14-10 overall).
Carson Whittington of Creston won the 2006 PGA Junior Match Play Championships for the 10-11 age group in Ames. It was held June 25-26 and he won three matches to earn the championship.

Creston cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings over Martensdale- St. Marys here Friday night behind the pitching of Nick Jannings and the bat of Ben Gerleman. Jannings gave up four hits, fanned five and walked just three, while Gerleman had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs.
Creston junior varsity beat Anita Winterset Saturday as it won the Orient-Macksburg JV Tournament. Brian Bucklin evened his record to 1-1 as he struck out four and walked three.
Throughout his 65 years, Horace Daggett has lived in many places. But he said Creston has always been a special place to him. Creston recently showed its gratitude for Daggett, 88th District representative for 24 years until his retirement this year. The 10,000 Crestonians chose him to he the grand marshal for the Fourth of July parade.
There will be no changes - other than ownership. Papetti’s HyGrade Egg Products Inc. today announced it will be purchased by Michael Foods in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $85 million.

Students of Farrell’s Tae Kwon Do Sunday donated paint, labor and sweat and painted the McKinley Park bridge and spillway which were marred by vandals in incidents earlier this year. Those participating in the painting included Tony and Michael Mansour, Deb Pendegraft, Lance Farrell, Noreen Braun, Dave Poore, Angie Brown and Judy Brown.
The final two days of showings for “Short Circuit” are this week. “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, begins Friday at the Strand Theater
Iowa’s only horse-drawn carney show, the Vintage Show Co., arrived in Creston and stayed last night at a campsite at the Historical Village in McKinley Park. The show will perform Friday and Saturday at the site of the Union County Historical Society Museum in McKinley Park.
