Wind turbine plan update delayed by county

The Union County Conference Board met to discuss the assessor's budget for fiscal year 2026.

Union County further delayed their wind turbine decommissioning plan update during last week’s board of supervisors meeting.

After tabling the update to their five-year decommissioning plan last week to look closer at the language, the plan was once again tabled. This time, additional input on the plan will be needed.

Supervisors Dennis Hopkins and Rick Friday both had perspectives they would like to hear opinions from in regards to the plan. Hopkins said he was waiting for a response from MidAmerican Energy, and Friday wanted an opinion from the county attorney.

A wind turbine decommissioning plan outlines how wind turbines in the area will be dismantled after 180 days of discontinued use. The plan also reviews the “anticipated means and cost of decommissioning the [turbine],” including the funding, and is updated every five years.

Also during this meeting was the board’s approval of a bond council engagement agreement with Ahlers & Cooney, P.C. The firm will represent the county as bond counsel for the county’s plan to sell bonds for the county’s urban renewal plan.

A public hearing was set for June 25 to discuss the potential action of the county selling general obligation urban renewal bonds not to exceed $5 million. These bonds will fund capital projects within Union County’s TIF district.
