Throwback Thursday

It’s back to the skies for Mid American Energy employees Dick Green and Ron Sweeny after dropping in for dinner at Happy Chef on Highway 34 in Creston Monday afternoon. Mid American of Hudson was inspecting the electrical transmission line from Creston to Winterset.

South Central Iowa Community Foundation awarded three area fire stations with surprise grants. Afton, Lorimor and Creston fire departments each received $2,500. SCICF awards grants to organizations from all over Union County from a distribution of gaming revenues and the Union County Endowment Fund.

The Creston girls soccer game Friday evening needed 10 rounds of a shootout to decide a winner as Knoxville barely edged out Creston 1-0. Creston met with Knoxville for the second time this season and for the second time in Creston, with the contest once again being decided by one score.

East Union’s Quinn Eslinger is headed to the Class 1A Girls State Tournament after qualifying with a 93 at the Atlantic regional finals. Eslinger shot the second best score of the day, falling three strokes off Sammi Jahde of CAM. As a team, East Union finished in fourth with a score of 430.

Creston beat East Sac County 2-0 Monday night, winning the first round of the Class 1A Substate 7 bracket. Riding a five-game skid entering Monday, the Panthers were hungry out of the gate to get the monkey off their back, putting multiple shots on net in the first few minutes. The Panthers finally broke through in the goal column with a score by Matt Borha by way of a cross that was intended for Brodie Wallace. The ball had other plans, catching the wind along with some added spin to turn into the net for the score roughly 10 minutes into the game.

16 years ago (2009)

Pat Schlapia and the Creston boys track team punctuated the 2009 season Wednesday night with a dessert banquet in the high school commons. Creston, who graduates seniors Derek Fogle and Tanner Royster, finished the spring with 23 athletes on the rosters, a number which pleased Schlapia.

Growing up in Creston, Gabe Carroll knew he wanted to get into health care. But, what he didn’t plan on was coming back to live in his hometown. “It’s nice to be here,” said Carroll, a 2001 Creston High School graduate who received his LPN degree at Southwestern Community College in 2002. Seven years later, he’s now Dr. Carroll, as is his wife, Linda, as Creston’s newest chiropractors. Together, they opened Carroll Family Chiropractic May 13 at 224 N. Pine Street.

Corning residents recently took a step forward in their quest for a new fire station. On May 5, voters in Corning passed a $200,000 bond issue to go toward replacing their current fire station, which is about 50 years old. A low turnout of about 200 people voted on the bond, but 72% were in favor of the bond.

26 years ago (1999)

Creston placed fourth Friday in the Hawkeye 10 Conference boys meet in Atlantic. Brian Bucklin had a solid meet, winning the high jump, taking second in the 200-meter dash and anchoring the 4x100 relay team to a fourth place finish.

Creston/O-M’s Rachel Miller went 3-2 Saturday to lead the Panthers’ efforts at the Hawkeye 10 Conference girls tennis tournament in Council Bluffs.

The Super 8 Motel in Creston received an anonymous call from a female at 9:51 a.m. Saturday, warning the motel that a bomb was going to explode at 10:30 a.m. there. Creston Fire, Police and Union County Sheriff’s Office officials evacuated both buildings and conducted a room-by-room search, finding nothing suspicious. The motel’s guests were allowed to return to their rooms shortly before noon.

Creston schools will save an estimated $120,000 with no teaching staff reductions, through budget adjustments approved by the school board Monday night. Several early retirements approved earlier this year allow many of the cost-cutting measures to be secured through attrition.

36 years ago (1989)

Discuss thrower Chris Reed leaned over to see the digits on the tape measure as officials determined the distance of his last toss in Saturday’s Class 3A district meet. The Creston senior liked what he saw. Reed sent the discuss sailing 149-5 as he moved from third following the prelims to capture second behind Atlantic’s Jon Pelzer.

The Creston school board will seek bids for additional dirt work at the site of the district’s new, four-year high school under construction. The work is needed to level areas on the school grounds to make them usable for activities.
