In her final trip to the Drake Relays as a collegiate student-athlete, Augustana College senior Kierra Smith of Creston took the most entertaining handoff in track and field and helped break a school record in the process Friday. The former Panther standout ran on Augustana’s distance medley relay team, running the 400 meter leg. As a team, the Vikings ran 11:59.98, breaking the previous school record by more than 15 seconds.
The 9-1 Creston boys soccer team has risen to No. 11 in Class 2A on the latest Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IAHSSCA) ratings. This poll of soccer coaches includes all matches played through April 26. The Panthers were ranked 16th last week. Before that, the last time Creston was ranked was No. 14, May 11, 2010.
The Creston/Orient-Macksburg golf teams picked up a sweep of Glenwood on Monday, with the boys posting a 158-188 win at home, while the girls won 216-274 at Glenwood.

Should the Creston High School Band play a new sound next year, they will have new uniforms to do it in. During a special Creston School Board meeting Thursday, the board approved contributing $10,000 to the purchase of the uniforms. High school band director Mike Peters informed the board the current uniforms were purchased in 1990 and have an eight-to-12-year lifespan.
Even with boys soccer starters Mike Baker and Steven Irr and reserve Caleb Brus out with injuries, Creston had no problem Tuesday evening disposing of Clarinda Academy. The Panthers shook off a lethargic start to cruise to a 6-0 victory at Panther Field.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came and went in just 45 1/2 seconds for four Orient-Macksburg runners Saturday morning. After weeks -- even years for some -- of anticipation leading up to the 95th annual Drake Relays, Alex Bauer, Brady Geidel, Thad Tussey and Ryan Lents cruised around the famous blue Jim Duncan Track at Drake Stadium in 45.64 seconds, good enough for fifth in heat 12.

Three bids by a Blockton man on abandoned railroad properties at a Union County tax sale April 11 were rejected Monday by the Union County Board of Supervisors. Ken Neilsen bid $50 for each of two abandoned railroad right-of-ways and $25 for another. The bids were rejected not for a legal reason, but for being too low.
The Creston Elk’s Lodge recently elected new officers for the 1994-95 year. The officers are: Exalted Ruler David Neely, Leading Knight John Cook, Loyal Knight Dick Hammond, Lecturing Knight Tom Fastenow, Champlain James Dosart, trustees Don Mosman and Dennis Nelson, Esquire Kevin Mahan, Tiler Doug Baker, Inner Guard David Hanson and Secretary Bob Bierkamp.
Creston Radio received two awards in the small market radio news category at the Iowa Broadcast News Association annual awards banquet Saturday at Hotel Fort Des Moines. The station received a first place award for best feature story and honorable mention for general reporting.

Southwestern Community College is getting closer to completing its All Iowa Forest. Members of the Creston Federated Garden Club recently planted a tree on the grounds in celebration of Arbor day.
The total healthcare concept will be even more evident at Creston’s Greater Community Hospital in about 1 1/2 years. The Crossroads Mental Health board gave unanimous approval to move its facilities into a proposed hospital addition at its meeting Tuesday.
It would have been hard for Creston’s Pantherette tracksters to have a better night Tuesday than they had Monday, so they didn’t really try. After taking second at their own relays Monday, the Pantherettes traveled to the Red Oak Tigerette Relays Tuesday, where they placed fourth in a four-team field.
Winners of the First National Bank Easter coloring contest were: 5- to 7-years-old - Michael E. Sobotka of Diagonal; 8- to 10-years-old - Derek B. Winterstien of Afton and 11- to 12-years-old - Dana Campbell of Mount Ayr.
The city of Lenox won’t hire two to three reserve female volunteer officers just yet. During it’s regular meeting Monday, the city council deferred city Police Chief Ray Manning’s request pending discussion with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office after concerns the female officers, if hired, would be used by the county.
