Throwback Thursday:

Creston/Orient-Macksburg boys tennis finished second with 18 points at a tournament in Saydel Saturday. Ballard won the tournament with 21 points. The doubles team of Colby Taylor and Bryce McIlravy won the doubles competition.

Creston/Orient-Macksburg boys golf dominated Clarinda 144-191 at Clarinda Country Club Friday. Sophomore Carson Whittington won medalist honors with his even-par round of 33. Senior David Thompson carded a round of 36, which was good enough for runner-up honors.

Audrey Fyock and Emma Johnson each won singles matches and teamed up to win in doubles to clinch Creston’s 5-4 tennis victory over visiting Audubon Thursday. The boys dual at Audubon was rained out.

When the sun rose Sunday morning and the pain of Saturday’s EF2 tornado could be witnessed in full color, Southern Prairie YMCA on the corner of Townline and Green Valley Road looked relatively unharmed. It looked, from the outside, like it had escaped the twister’s wrath, especially when compared to neighboring structures like Green Hills AEA building and Creston Park Apartments, which laid in shambles less than 200 yards away. ”The building looks OK outside, but inside we received a lot of water damage,” said YMCA Director Jacki Steffen.

Creston and East Union School districts have been sharing some teachers and resources for several years. Is there a possibility there could be more? It’s being considered. In a joint meeting between the two school boards Wednesday, Bob Steele, Green Valley Area Education Agency administrator, and Julie Weisshaar, GVAEA communication director, facilitated discussion on sharing administration, specifically a superintendent.

Chad Ryan Means, former Creston resident, is co-producing and starring in a two-man show in New York City. The show “Lonely Planet” by Steven Dietz will run April 18 through 28 off Broadway at the Pantheon Theatre. Means is the son of Debbie Means and Larry Means, both of Creston.

The Creston Fire Department acquired a new truck April 4 to add to its arsenal of response vehicles.

Twenty-eight Creston FFA members along with advisor Galen Zumbach, chaperone Ann Johnson and student teacher Jessica Rohrig were among more than 4,200 members and guests who attended the 74th State FFA Leadership Conference in Des Moines. The Creston DDA membership was once again named one of Iowa’s top chapters, placing sixth in the National Chapter Award Competition.

33 years ago (1992)

The Creston Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday at the new location of Wolfe and Busenbarrick Fine Jewelry, 113 N. Maple St., in Creston.

Action on a letter of resignation submitted by Creston head wrestling coach John Walters is on the agenda for Monday night’s meeting of the Creston Board of Education. Walters plans to keep his position as math teacher at Burton R. Jones Middle School. Assistant Coach Dan Stephens, who preceded Walters as head coach, said he is not interested in assuming the head position again.

The Creston High School blood drive had 131 students, staff and faculty sign up to donate blood Thursday. Their goal was 112.

Heather Hogan of Prescott has been selected by the Williamson Legion Auxiliary Post 719 to attend the 1992 Girls State June 6 to 13 at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

An intense spring storm triggered a mixed bag of weather across Iowa, dumping nearly a foot of snow in the west and spawning thunderstorms and a tornado in the east.

43 years ago (1982)

Leo Powers of rural Creston was honored during Crestland Co-op’s annual meeting Thursday night for the time he has spent on the co-op’s board of directors. He was presented a plaque from the co-op manager Larry Crosser. The plaque was significant of six years on the cooperative’s governing board.

Creston Community Theatre presented the Young People’s Repertory Company of the Old Creamery Theatre in “Road Show” at Lincoln Elementary School gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Old Creamery Theatre, located in Garrison, has toured throughout the midwest with many shows. About 75 people attended the performance.

The Creston Chamber of Commerce added 48 members to its roles last week during an annual four-day membership drive. Forty-six were recruited by teams and two joined at the office.

Fines, which totaled $23,600 in Union County courts over the last six months, were distributed to schools that serve residents of the county. Creston Schools received $16,780; East Union got $6,692; Lenox for $82 and Orient-Macksburg received $9. Money was divided based on student enrollment.
