Creston City Clerk Lisa Williamson never set out to work in government, but for the last 18 years, she’s worked as the backbone for the city of Creston, putting out fires and helping newly elected officials learn the ropes. Williamson will be stepping down at the end of the year.
Originally from Creston, Williamson always knew she’d be in the clerical field. “It was always a thing for me. I wanted to do what my mom did, and she was in the clerical field,” Williamson said. “I wanted to follow in those footsteps, and I guess I kind of nailed it.”
She first joined city hall in 2005, working as Creston’s accounts manager for 13 months. Then came the retirement of then-city clerk Mary Moore, and Williamson had the opportunity to move up. For the next 18 years, Williamson has worked as city clerk.
According to Williamson, every day as city clerk has been different. “You don’t necessarily have a set schedule,” she said. “Sometimes we just have to work around that what we think is a set schedule, because there’s fires to put out all the time. Something new comes around and gets dumped on your desk. It’s a pretty busy position.” However, she’s enjoyed getting to work with a variety of people through the years.
Once retired, she said she’s excited to travel with her husband and take time to work more on her side business, which promotes health and wellness.
In preparation for her retirement, the city of Creston is working to hire a new city clerk. The position is full time and comes with a comprehensive benefits package. Duties include managing city records, drafting amendments to city ordinances and coordinating city documents. A full list of qualifications and duties can be found on the city website under “Employment Opportunities.” Those interested must submit their application to the city by Sept. 25.
