Creston/Orient-Macksburg coach Brian Morrison and retiring Bedford coach Bob McCoy were each honored as regional coach of the year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association. The IFCA recently issued a news release of all of its selections and Morrison was named for Class 3A Region 2.
Creston took advantage of Council Bluffs St. Albert’s mistakes here Thursday in a Hawkeye 10 Conference varsity doubleheader sweep, winning 20-0 and 15-0. Lexie Little led the offensive attack for Creston in the 20-0 win, going 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two more. Haylee LaMasters picked up the win for the Panthers, going all five innings and striking out eight with two walks. The Panthers scored two runs in the first inning, seven in the second and six more in the third to win the second game. Taylor Briley pitched the complete game no-hitter, striking out two and walking one.
Anyone with a Registered Nursing (RN) degree will have the opportunity to earn a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree this fall at Southwestern Community College campus, through a new William Penn University program. The RN to BSN program will be a hybrid, which means it includes a mixture of face-to-face and online instruction.
A former Spartan and Panther is taking over the Southwestern Community College golf program. Southwestern officials announced Doug North of Creston as the head coach for the men’s and women’s golf teams. He succeeds Larry Shimono and will begin recruiting for the golf program immediately.

It started out as a pitcher’s duel, with Creston trailing 2-1 after two innings. But as the night cooled down, the Panther bats heated up to the tune of 17 hits, including three homers, as Creston secured a 13-4 baseball victory over Shenandoah Tuesday night.
It was not a fond farewell for Creston native and Glenwood head coach Scott Beatty. Creston cruised past Glenwood in Hawkeye-10 action 11-1 in five innings in Beatty’s final return to Panther field. Beatty is taking the assistant principal job at Linn Mar after the baseball season is complete.
For the second time in three games, one run made all the difference for the Creston softball team. The Panthers fell to Nodaway Valley, rated 15th in Class 2A, 1-0 in the semifinals of the Orient-Macksburg tournament Saturday afternoon. Pitchers Chantel Klejch of Creston and Mandy Boes matched each other pitch-for-pitch.

When Creston High School students go back to school this fall they will face a tougher student handbook. The Creston Community school board adopted more stringent student behavior rules its monthly meeting earlier this week. The handbook revisions were prompted by an increase in discipline problems at the high school.
The Spotlight on Crestland Athletes was on Scott Coen, a senior infielder-pitcher for the Creston Panthers. He has been an early season leader for the baseball team in games through June 19, with a team-high 17 RBIs and was batting .400 with 18 hits in 45 at bats. As a pitcher, Coen started the season 2-1 with a 3.5 ERA, including a nine-inning effort at Glenwood Tuesday.
Three and one-half years ago, corporate officials announced Hy-Vee would be moving from its current location on Sheldon Street to the former Sernett’s building in Creston. Now the move is a reality. Renovation has begun on the new facility, with completion scheduled for this fall.

The Southwest Iowa Lakes Fest ‘85 Committee has completed its schedule of events with the festival scheduled for Friday through Sunday and and is coordinated jointly by the Stanton Chamber of Commerce and Viking Lake State Park. The event is a moving festival held each year at different lakes in Southwest Iowa to promote tourism and recreation in the area.
After 35 years of treating the ailments of Creston area residents, Dr. James B. Gault retired on June 1, following a very highly respected medical career. The retirement came only shortly before he was elected to the Board of Directors of Stanford University Medical Alumni Association for a three year term. Dr. Gault graduated from Stanford in 1947.
Area people will have more places buy wine in Creston sometime starting in July. Now, true wine can only be purchased at the state Liquor Store on U.S. Highway 34 in south Creston. But two groceries have made applications to get newly created off-premise wine permits. Easters Family Center and Hy-Vee grocery received local approval for wine sales at the Tuesday city council meeting.
