Little progress in determining properties

Union County Board of Supervisors told a property owner Monday there has been little progress in determining legal boundaries of private and what was public property in the area north of Creston known as Spaulding.

Roxanne Wilson Brown asked the supervisors Monday about what has happened since she inquired about the legal boundaries last June.

“We came to one of your meetings and I had my mother with who owns property in Spaulding,” Brown said. Her mother is interested in selling property but the abstract is not clear because of what were streets which are now in agriculture fields.

“What are we finding out,” she asked about the separation of the properties.

Supervisor Dennis Hopkins said there has been “a little” progress but are not at the point of legally updating the area in question. Brown said she knows of another person in the area who may have acquired property in the same area without any legal delays. County officials were interested in knowing who it was and learning of their process to acquire the property. Brown said she would give the county the additional information.

“It’s finding the paper trail,” Hopkins said. “And we haven’t found it yet.”

Spaulding, Kent and Talmage were names of areas in discussions last summer where after the areas were unincorporated some of the land was still kept in municipal name. Over time, private properties were established overlapping some of the town’s former areas.

Some of the areas in Kent, in west part of the county, appear to be easier to convert as property is listed under Kent Fire Department and Kent School. Kent unincorporated in the early 2000s.

Supervisors were to meet with a representative from Ahlers Cooney law firm about labor and employment services. The representative was not able to attend and the meeting will be rescheduled.
