10 years ago (2013)

Creston Fire Department will have a new truck by the end of the month.The truck, purchased by the city of Creston, is replacing a 25-year-old truck. The truck will be able to hold six people in the cab, compared to two in the old truck. The seats have built-in air tanks for quicker response time. The truck will also have more storage space.

Charlotte “Charly” Proctor, 9, won first place in the 10,000 Crestonians Talent Show held July 4 at McKinley Park. Proctor won $25 in prize money and decided to donate the money to Dog Gone Rescue — Creston’s non-profit animal shelter.

Southwestern Community College Board of Directors Tuesday approved a tuition increase of 4 percent for residents and 4.2 percent for nonresidents effective fall 2014, during a regular monthly board meeting. There will also be a new fee for online content of either $67 or $117, depending on the online course.

20 years ago (2003)

Creston’s softball team didn’t let down after Thursday’s big doubleheader sweep of Atlantic, as pitcher Chantel Klejch tossed a two-hitter in the Panther’s dominating 10-0 win over Orient-Macksburg Saturday at the Mount Ayr Classic.

The Creston Panthers faced area foes Mount Ayr and West Central Valley (Stuart) in their annual Fourth of July Tournament and didn’t allow one run. The baseball team shut out Mount Ayr 11-0 and West Central Valley 10-0.

After a brief break, Phil Mattson of Creston is on the final leg of his cross-country bike tour. Mattson has logged 2,688 miles since departing April 23 from California. Mattson expects to complete the remaining 450 miles of his tour around July 11.

Union County Supervisors Monday unanimously approved a 2.5 percent deappropriation in each department to cover an expected increase in employees health insurance premiums. Last month supervisors approved a five percent deappropriation in all department budgets due to the shortfall from the state.

30 years ago (1993)

“This is the worst I’ve seen it,” said Ringgold County Engineer Vaughn Clark about his county’s roads and bridges after rainfall up to seven inches caused already swollen creeks and rivers to escape their banks. Radio weather reports say another two to four inches of rain is expected every day this week, “We just turned off the radio,” Clark said.

Trent Eggman and Clinton Brown of Creston will exhibit Angus cattle July 13 to 17 at the 1993 National Junior Angus Show at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita, Kansas. The national show is the largest single breed registered beef cattle show in the world.

Creston junior Cory Latham’s hitting, backed up by a solid Panther defense, led the Panthers to a 4-2 win over Harlan Tuesday night in Hawkeye Eight Conference baseball action. Latham went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI’s for Creston.

They are closing up shop and locking the doors at the Army Reserve armory in Creston. The 312th General Supply Company, with detachments in Creston and Ames, is being inactivated this month. Inactivation ceremonies are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday in Creston. The 312th was activated in 1962.

40 years ago (1983)

Burlington Northern Foundation grants totaling $4,600 were presented Saturday to three local charities by Wayne A. Hatton, vice president and general manager of the Chicago region of BN Railroad. The recipients were: Southwest Iowa Sheltered Workshop in Creston, $2,000; Southwestern Community College, $2,000 and Creston United Fund, $600.

A Union County woman in her 60s who lived in an institution for 52 years has been released and is now living in her own home with help from a county homemaker health aid. Because she was institutionalized most of her life, she has to be socialized and taught such things as how to go to the store and purchase items and receives help with personal care.

Eleven young women have been selected as candidates for the 1983 Union County Fair Queen: Kathy Bennett of Creston, daughter of Louis and Sharon Bennett; Amy Frain of Afton, daughter of Willard and Janice Frain; Lori Hartsock of Diagonal, daughter of Wayne and Joan Hartsock; Mary Huss of Afton, daughter of Bruce and Mardelle Huss; Jeanine Johnston of Creston, daughter of Scott and Dixie Moore; Donna Kuehl of Creston, daughter of the Rev. Lyle and Judy Kuehl; Janet Moore and Kathy Moore of Creston, daughters of John and Mary Moore; Jayna Oglesbee of Afton, daughter of Sharon Steward and Robert Oglesbee; Sandy Rivers of Thayer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Rivers and Natalie Williams of Lorimor, daughter of Russell and June Williams.
