Murray’s Chew to play two sports for Spartans

Southwestern Community College

Last fall, Murray High School senior Jayda Chew signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for the Spartans at Southwestern Community College beginning fall 2023. Early this week, Chew added volleyball to her slate for the 2023-24 academic year.

Chew has been a high school standout in basketball, softball, track and volleyball. During the 2022 volleyball season, Chew reached 1,000 career assists as a setter for the Murray Mustangs. She was selected as first-team all-conference in 2021 and 2022; second-team all-conference in 2020; her team’s MVP in 2021 and 2022 and the team captain in 2022.

First-year Spartan Head Coach Taylor Shipley said she is excited Chew has made the decision to play for the Spartan volleyball program.

“With 1,000 assists under her belt, as well as being MVP and team captain, she is positioned well to succeed as a setter at the collegiate level,” Shipley said. “Her athletic ability and mental toughness will continue to develop during her time here as a dual sport athlete and will prove to be a huge asset to our program.”

High school softball honors for Chew include honorable mention all-state, all-district, unanimous first team all-conference, and .400 Club in 2022; unanimous second team all-conference in 2021 and stolen base leader in 2022 and 2021.
