Four Creston Panther football players were named to the first Hawkeye Eight all-conference team announced today, including three unanimous offensive choices. Juniors Dennis Shaw, leading rusher in the conference, along with quarterback Scott Driskell and senior guard Chad Hightshoe were selected by each voter. Linebacker Matt Kuhns, a senior from Orient-Macksburg in Creston’s football sharing agreement, earned a first team defensive spot but came up short of unanimous selection.
Veteran Creston official Howard Browne will be inducted into the first ever Girls Basketball Officials and Coaches Hall of Fame Saturday night in Des Moines. During his 32 years of officiating, “Brownie,” a Creston High School graduate, officiated with the likes of the late Bill Sears and the duo became one of the top basketball officiating teams in the state. “I started umpiring baseball when I was a member of Patton’s army in Europe during World War II and I’ve been active every year since,” said Browne.
Susan Eller, 24, of St. Charles, the former Susan Carnahan of Lenox, who gave birth in the hospital parking lot before dawn on Thursday, hopes her ride home is much more uneventful. At about 4:30 p.m. Eller and her two daughters, ages 6 and 3, made the 40-mile trip to Greater Community Hospital, her contractions were five minutes apart. When they arrived the group tried to enter the hospital at the wrong entrance, causing she and the girls to go back to the pickup to drive to another door. However, she could wait no longer, and gave birth to daughter Rachel Lynne on the ground beside the pickup. “She’s doing fine, I’m doing fine,” said Eller, who hopes to come home Saturday or Sunday.

Creston/O-M was represented well on the All-District 8 Football Team. Four Panthers – senior Phil Jensen, junior Clay Leonard, senior Travis Turner and senior Brian Bucklin made the first team, while senior s Chris Keenan, Cory Gerleman, Mike Taylor and John Coen were second team selections. Senior Rusty Smith received honorable mention.
The Creston Chamber of Commerce held its 59th annual meeting Tuesday at Berning Motor Inn. The chamber’s Leadership Award was presented to the local Youth Plus organization. Glen Weaver received the Creston News Advertiser/Creston Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award.
A Union County Conservation Board proposal ranked first among 54 projects funded by grants recently approved by the National Resource Commission. A shelter/education center at Three Mile Lake received a grant of $63,843, ranking highest among 159 applications for locally owned and managed recreational facility improvement and construction.
Crest Area Theatre’s 25th anniversary season will begin with performances of “The Cemetery Club” Nov. 20, 21 and 22. Cast members include Carilyn Barton, Cathy Whited, Sandee Brownrigg, Norma Crawford and Gordon Schofer.

The Revolution begins tonight. It all starts on the stage of Creston High School’s auditorium with the school vocal department’s production of “Les Miserables.” Three performances will be held: tonight and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
In a column by Rich Paulson, CNA publisher, the thought for the week reads, “The work of the individual still remains the spark that moves mankind ahead even more than teamwork.” - Igor Sikorsky, developer of the helicopter.
Creston School District’s 2008/09 official count has school opfficials pleased, but still wanting improvement. This year, total enrollment for the Creston Community School District dropped 8.4 students from 2007/08 school year to approximately 1,400 students.
Creston High School EAST students will hold a free Thanksgiving potluck dinner for those who are in need 6-8 p.m. Friday in the commons at the high school. CHS students will provide musical entertainment for the event.
Southwestern Community College continues to grow, and the 2008 student demographics report suggests it’s being used more by the community. During the past decade, Southwestern’s enrollment has increased from 1,142 students to 1,468 students as of this fall semester –– a 30% increase.
