46 years ago (1976)
Window painting was a homecoming activity this year for Creston High School. Many Creston merchants allowed high school seniors to paint the window of their store Thursday. Each senior homeroom was given one block to decorate.
Firemen who answered an alarm that lots of smoke was seen at Pine and Montgomery streets found a spent smoke grenade in front of 129 North Pine Street. The smoke was reported by a passerby.
A bird’s nest that had been built in an outdoor light fixture at King’s Highway Café caught fire Saturday. Fireman were called and removed the burning nest.
The new four lane pavement on Highway 25 will open on Friday. Harvey Olson, resident construction engineer here for the highway division of the Iowa Department of Transportation said today. The highway has been completely rebuilt from Russell Avenue to just west of Summit Lake bridge, west of Creston.

Berning & Strand Theatre is hosting a Ladies Night Out. Creston Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring “Fall Get Away From It All” on Thursday. A dinner, style show and performance featuring humorist Cathy Fife is included in the evening.
The Southwestern Community College board of directors re-elected Larry Mark as board president at its reorganizational meeting. Dr. Duane Mitchell was re-elected vice president and Martha Elliot re-elected board secretary.
There is water flowing through the basement that could undermine the foundation, plaster flaking from the ceilings and water flow issues causing hand washing to be difficult – these potential hazards were reported in a Thursday Creston School Board meeting by the Creston school district’s economy task force.
The Creston class of 1936 had 100 members attend their 50th class reunion celebration the weekend of Oct. 4 at Berning’s Cafe.

Enrollment at Southwestern Community College is up 1.4 percent this fall, continuing a three year trend of steady increases. Final fall enrollment is 1,228, compared to 1,211 in 1995 and 1,191 two years ago,
Two friends are engaged in a battle. On one side stands Tim Rooney, plant manager at Bunn-O-Matic and its 400 employees. On the other side is Randy Clark, general manager at Mederer Corporation and its 375 employees. Rooney and Clark have devised a corporate challenge to generate donations for Union County United Fund. The industry with the most qualified participants and biggest donation wins. The losers will serve donuts to the winners.
Creston High School marching band’s color guard and drum majors were selected outstanding performers during the Clarinda Band Jamboree held Saturday. High School marching band placed second in parade and field competition.
Sara Harris was crowned Creston High School’s 1996 homecoming queen at coronation ceremonies Thursday night in the performing arts center at the high school. Sara is the daughter of Sandy Harris and the late Dr. Dan Harris.

Community colleges are experiencing a surge in the number of high school students taking college credit courses. During the 2005-06 school year, 23,000 students across the state of Iowa enrolled in classes counting for both high school and college credit. Just one year prior only 3,200 students participated. At SWCC approximately 400 students are area high school students taking college courses.
A ground breaking ceremony will be held 5 p.m. Monday at the site of the new assisted living facility on Prairie Street. The site is located south of Greater Regional Medical Center and the public is invited to attend.
For nearly five hours Wednesday night, a large swatch of southwest Iowa was without cable and internet services. The outage affected Mediacom customers in Union, Ringgold, Decatur and parts of Clarke counties when a private contractor sliced a fiber optic line north of Bevington.
Creston’s Scott Vicker knew from experience he was the best mile-runner in the Hawkeye 10 from track season last spring. He used that mile-running to pull away from Clarinda’s Danny Owens and win his second straight Hawkeye 10 Championship on Thursday. Vicker finished with a time of 16.39, eight seconds ahead of Owens.
