County road vehicle hit on N. Cherry

A Lenox man was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital Thursday after a collision involving a Union County Vehicle.

Just before 2 p.m. Thursday, a white Chevrolet Malibu driven by James Teague, 68, of Lenox, hit a Caterpillar road maintainer, driven by Kolten Phelps, 23, of Creston.

Phelps and Teague were both driving southbound on North Cherry Street Road. Teague approached Phelps and swerved to miss, but struck the drag hook bracket and sidewall of the left rear tire.

The Malibu lost control, going across the northbound ditch and struck a field drive causing the vehicle to go airborne. It came to rest on its wheels. The vehicle had four occupants, all transported to Greater Regional Medical Center.

The Malibu sustained extensive damage.

Phelps was uninjured in the accident, and the county vehicle suffered minimal to no damage.
