Maggard named public works director

Greg Maggard took over as the city of Creston’s public works director April 30.

“I have 20 years experience doing municipal government, from public works to town manager,” he said.

The Oklahoma native hails from Proctor, Vermont, where he worked as town manager since July 2020. Prior to that, he has served as town manager in Bethel and Buena Vista, Colorado. During his career, he has also worked as public works director in Calahan, Colorado, and town administrator in Shattuck, Oklahoma.

Joining Maggard will be his wife of 20 years, Kristi, and their children, Grady, 16. The Maggards also have a daughter, Sierra, 25, who is attending medical school in Colorado.

Maggard is spending his first week acclimating the town and understanding its needs.

“I think we need to look at the zoning ordinances and do some rewriting of that. I think it’s something that needs to be looked at,” he said.

Infrastructure, such as roads and sewers, are a priority of his, as well.

“There’s possibly going to be some money coming in from the federal government we’re looking at taking advantage of,” he said about infrastructure.

Maggard said he will begin a 5 to 10-year capital plan, which will have all the projects that need to get done and how the funding will work.

‘So we will have sort of a road map,” he said. “I’m also going to do a roadway analysis.”

A roadway analysis will bring Maggard down each of Creston’s streets. He will use an engineering matrix to score each based on condition, usage and lifespan.

“Baby steps, you know. It’s so expensive,” he said.

Maggard can be reached at 641-782-2000 ext. 207.
