Uptown Clean Up (April 15)

Volunteers are invited to join the UCDA for an uptown clean up event 9 a.m. Thursday. Garbage bags will be provided by the UCDA, but volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, “pooper scoopers,” if handy. Everyone is welcome to participate.

VA Mobile Medical Unit (April 16)

Central Iowa VA Virtual Health is offering 2021 onsite visits to provide services to veterans in the Creston area. The VA Mobile Medical Unit will allow veterans to schedule and attend appointments in a secure and private Telehealth connection. The unit will be located at the Alliant Energy parking lot, 208 W. Taylor St. on April 16, June 18, August 20, October 15 and December 15. Some of the services available are primary care, respiratory, cardiology, nutrition, occupational therapy and lab draws. Afton United Methodist Church Spring Fling Supper (April 16)

Service starts 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, with drive thru and carry out only. Menu is spaghetti bake, corn, coleslaw, garlic bread and fruit crisp or bars. A free will offering will be accepted. Line up starts heading west on Polk street to drive into the lower level of the UMC Parking lot.

Creston Fine Arts Fest (April 18)

Creston Fine Arts Fest, 2 p.m. April 18, featuring performances by the Creston High School jazz band, instrumental soloists, dancers, winterguard and more. There will also be an all-you-can-eat dessert bar and pie auction. This is a fundraiser for the Creston High School Band and free will donations will be welcomed, with a suggestion of $5 per person.

Spring Dessert Theater (April 23)

Mayflower Heritage Christian School are performing “Nic at Night,” which focuses on the story of Nicodemus during its annual dessert theater 7 p.m. April 23. Tickets are $5 and there will be a silent auction.

Market on Maple (April 24)

Market on Maple is a pop up shop event featuring a juried selection of vendors and family-friendly activities in 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Uptown Creston. The event will feature live music by Dan Trilk 7 to 9 p.m. on the 100 and 200 blocks of North Maple Street. Vendors will include handcrafted goods and vintage wares. Uptown businesses will have specials and promotions as well. Spotlight School of Dance and Isaac the Clown will be performing during the day. Rain date April 25. Unstoppable: Spotlight School of Dance recital (April 24)

Spotlight is showcasing its students in an outdoor community performance during the UCDA’s “Market on Maple” event in Uptown Creston, 9 a.m. April 24. Students will perform recital choreography on a covered stage while community members are welcome to watch from picnic blankets or lawn chairs in the green space nestled uptown.

Social Justice Book Club (April 26)

Adult Book Discussion (April 27)

Creston Kiwanis Pancake Days (May 4)

Kiwanis Club members now have tickets to sell for the Annual Pancake Fundraiser, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 4 at the United Methodist Church. Carry out is an option. Tickets are $7 if purchased prior to the event or $8 at the door for adults. All-you-can-eat pancakes with sausage and drink. This fundraiser helps the club donate to numerous projects throughout the year. Event details are also listed on the Creston Kiwanis Facebook page.

Union County Community Baby Shower (May 6)

Union County prenatal families and families with young infants are invited to a community baby shower for prize drawings and baby resources 4 to 6 p.m. May 6 in the Tech Center parking lot at Southwestern Community College. Register by calling SWCC at 641-782-1441.

Green Valley Night Catfish Tournament (May 8 and 9)

A first ever night catfish tournament will be hosted 7 p.m. May 8 to 7 a.m. May 9 at the north ramp of Green Valley Lake. For more information on entry fees and prizes, visit the Facebook event page to message Andy Jennings.

PEO Trunk Sale (May 15)

Creston PEO’s 8th Annual Trunk sale will take place 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the depot parking lot.

Lake Icarian Catfish Tournament (May 22)

Fish for blue catfish in a first ever event 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Lake Icaria May 22. Boats will be launching from main boat ramp. For more information on entry fees and prizes, visit the Facebook event page or message Southern Iowa Catfish Seekers on Facebook.

CCHS Graduation (May 23)

Preston Community High School graduation is 2 p.m May 23. More details to come.

Live music with locally grown vegetables, dairy, beef, baked and handmade goods will be available 4 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays

Rainbow Park Ice Cream Social (June 19)

Save the date for the Southside Booster Club’s annual Rainbow Park celebration. This year will feature a car show, country music performance and activities for kids. More details to come.

Lenox Rodeo (July 22)

The 76th Annual Lenox Iowa Rodeo begins 7:30 p.m. July 22. Featured events during rodeo week include a parade, youth activities, steer riding and mutton bustin’ with a Lenox Stock and Saddle Club riders main event each night. The grounds are located on East Iowa St. in the south east part of Lenox. Hinterland Music Festival (Aug. 6 to 8)

Three days of music curated for all who love music and the outdoors Aug. 6 to 8 at the Avenue of Saints Amphitheater in Saint Charles. Headliners include The Avett Brothers, Tyler Childers, Leon Bridges and more. Visit Hinterlandiowa.com for more info.

Iowa State Fair (Aug. 12 to 22)

The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. Go Fly a Kite (Aug. 24)

Ringgold County Conservation is hosting a free kite flying event 2 to 4 p.m. April 24 at Liberty Lake, just north of Mount Ayr. The first 15 families will receive a free kite to fly and take home. Participants will meet at the Lakeview Shelter House and then spread out along the east hills to fly their kites. A few kites that groups and families can check out and return are also available. Ayr Days 2021 (Aug 28)

Mount Ayr celebrates its annual town celebration with a parade, a large variety of vendors, food trucks, rides and games 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 28. For more info, follow the event page on Facebook.

Tingley’s 2nd Annual Ice Cream Social (Aug. 29)

Tingley’s 2nd Annual Ice Cream Social judged competition will be 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29. Free will offerings will be accepted. Lunch will also be available to purchase at the event courtesy of the Cattlemen’s Association and Kids in Touch. A non-judged antique car, bike and tractor show will take place. Ringgold County’s Ranger Kate will be sponsoring an event for kids.
