‘Flowers for Algernon’ (March 5, 6, and 7)

Creston Community High School will perform “Flowers for Algernon,” a play by David Rogers, based on the novel by Daniel Keyes. The first performances will be 7 p.m. March 5 and 6 at Creston Community High School Auditorium, with an afternoon perfomance following, 2 p.m. March 7. Admission is $5 social distancing and face masks are required.

‘Owl Prowl’ (March 6)

Join Ringgold County Conservation Board Director Kate Zimmerman for an Owl Prowl at the Dragoon Trace Nature Center east of Mount Ayr 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 6. Learn about the anatomy of an owl and find out what makes it the only successful predatory bird after dark. Attendees can also meet Rufous, who was a permanently injured live screech owl now in the care of the board. A hike through the park has also been planned. Attendees are asked to dress weather appropriate to this free event. For more information call Ringgold County Conservation at 641-464-2787.

Sew Sweet Quilt Retreat (March 12-14)

Bring a project to work on and stitch with friends. This quilt retreat is 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. March 12 and 13, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 inside the educational building at First United Methodist Church. Attendees must preregister as space is limited. Additional quilting retreats to be held in June, Sept. and Nov. Contact Wendy Sticken at 641-202-2955 or wendy.sticken@icloud.com.

2nd Legislative Coffee (March 13)

Meet with Rep. Tom Moore and Sen. Tom Shipley for the next updates on the 2021 Iowa legislative session, 9 to 10:30 a.m. March 13 and April 10 via Zoom. Access details of the next Zoom meeting TBD. The chamber requests that questions be submitted in writing, either by email at chamber@crestoniowachamber.com or to the Creston Chamber Facebook Page. Currently Representative Tom Moore and Senator Tom Shipley are planning to attend. The coffees are open to the public at no charge.

Virtual Storm Spotter Training (March 17)

Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service in Des Moines will host a Virtual Storm Spotter training session at 7 p.m. March 17 via GoToWebinar. This training is open to county responders and the public. The virtual training session is free and will give basic information on the formation of severe weather storms, how they function, what to report, as well as how and where to communicate storm information. The training will allow an attendee to register as a severe storm spotter with the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service still needs reports from trained weather spotters, because in addition to Doppler, it’s helpful to also know what’s happening on the ground. Trained weather spotters fill in this gap of information. Registration is required to attend and can be completed at: http://bit.ly/2Lm59nK.

Cookies & Canvas painting class (March 19)

Cookies & Canvas painting class will be 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 19 at Corning Opera House, 800 Davis Ave. in Corning. Southwest Valley Art Teacher Diane Mitchell will be teaching how to paint a brightly colored spring floral painting for $30. All supplies and refreshments are included in the fee. Tingley annual ‘Baked Potato Bar’ (March 24)

Tingley will host their annual Baked Potato Bar from 5 to 7 p.m. March 24 at the Tingley Community Building. To pre order carry-out, call Nancy Jarred at 641-772-4974 or Lywanda Case at 641-344-3332. Baked potatoes on offer with choice of toppings: ham, sour cream, chili, broccoli, onions, cheese and green peppers. Dine in or carry out. Free will donations are welcomed and everyone is invited. Proceeds will go to Tingley Community Building. Event sponsored by Tingley Lions Club.

‘What’s On Your Nightstand?’ (Thursday)

Every Thursday at 5 p.m., join online via Zoom. This is a casual group to share a love of literature and perhaps find a new book to read.
