Gibson Memorial Library March 2021 programs and activities

Gibson Memorial Library is offering several virtual programs and two take-and-make crafts for the month of the March.

Gibson Memorial Library Board meeting

The Gibson Memorial Library Board meeting will be 5:15 p.m. March 1 in the library’s genealogy room to discuss phase two reopening of the library, which includes opening the library up to meetings and gatherings. The subsequent board meeting will be April 5 in the same location. Meeting agendas can be viewed at creston.lib.ia.us/about/library-board.

Zoom open coffee

Take-and-make crafts

• DIY beaded wind chime. Craft a wind chime to enjoy in the garden. This is a take and make craft and supplies for the craft will be provided. Pre-registration is required.Register at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4EABAA23A1F9CE9-diybeaded

• Brownie in a mug. Learn how to make a delicious brownie in a mug. This take-and-make craft is geared toward young adults. Supplies for the craft will be provided and pre-registration is required. To register visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4EABAA23A1F9CE9-brownie.

Both crafts will be available from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 26. A special activity will also be included in all craft materials.

Zoom book clubs and discussions

The Zoom book club “What is on your nightstand?” will be 5 p.m. March 11. Join in for a casual conversation about the books you are currently reading, the books you wish you had time to read or simply come to connect with other people. The next Zoom adult book discussion will be held 5 p.m. March 30. The book to be discussed is “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. Copies of the book may be checked out at at the library. Other library activities

The 2021 Adult Winter Reading Program will be ending March 5. The theme is “It’s a Mystery.” Participants must have read eight mystery novels checked out from the library, in whichever format available. Registration and book logs will be available at the library. Contact Merle Lee for more details or to register. Prizes will be handed out at the conclusion of the program.

The 2021 Public Library Association’s Early Literacy Calendar began Jan 1, running through to Dec. 31. Each month, visit the library to collect a free activity-packed calendar. One side of the calendar contains a skill-building activity for each day. The other side has supplementary content such as a nursery rhyme, early literacy tips, song lyrics or suggested reading material.

Beginning genealogy packets-to-go

Terry Madison has compiled beginning genealogy packets to go. These packets may be collected from the genealogy room at the library.

Ready, Set, Spring

Spring 2021 STEM Connection, for students in preschool through 5th grade. Register and receive a STEM bag, with a month’s worth of STEM activities children can do at home, such as experiments, activities, sheets, challenge cards, suggested reading lists, recipes, snacks, along with all the necessary materials. Each week will have a different theme. This program is made possible by the Governor’s STEM Council of Iowa in partnership with the Gibson Memorial Library. Registration forms are at: creston.lib.ia.us and can be printed off to be mailed. Return completed registration forms by March 29 to Gibson Memorial Library, 200 W. Howard St. Creston, IA 50801. Participants can pick up bags starting April 5.
