Summer fun in the pool to begin June 2

Lifeguard certification process begins this weekend

Extra hose sits on the low diving board at the Greenfield swimming pool as it fills for the upcoming 2026 season, which right now, is slated to begin June 2.

For those who are unsure whether summer will ever arrive, have no fear: the Greenfield swimming pool is being filled for the upcoming season.

City officials said the tentative opening day is Tuesday, June 2, but the public works department began filling the pool last Friday. The process usually takes a couple of days.

“Our public works department, led by Brian Hoadley, who has been working with the pool for more than 37 years, has been working to get the pool cleaned and ready to be filled,” Greenfield City Administrator Michelle Carns said. “The rain we had kind of slowed us down a little bit, but they’ve been able to catch up. Our goal is to be able to begin heating it so that we can do lifeguard certifications beginning this weekend.”

Carns said this year’s pace is ahead of schedule compared to past years. The pool has a lifeguarding staff of 15, and organizers want to make sure there is ample time for those who need to be certified or recertified. Officials said about 60% of this year’s staff members are returning from previous seasons. The staff will be led by returning manager Erin Rhoads with assistant manager sisters Sophia and Vivienne Burnside.

“We think it will be a really fun summer job for these lifeguards. We have stressed that while it’s a fun summer job, the core and essential purpose of a lifeguard is safety — keeping our swimmers and those who are enjoying the pool safe at all times,” Carns said. “The city owes a debt of gratitude to the Operation Pool Committee, and specifically Deb Parrott, who has poured her heart into making the pool culture a fun place to work. You can have fun while you’re being safe and make it a great place for kids to learn and grow.”

There is a possibility the pool will bring back night swim events this summer.

Pool rates also were made public recently, with no increase from last season. They are as follows:

Daily general admission is free for children 2 and younger. Admission for those 3 and older is $5.

Season passes for families of two or three are $110. Season passes for families of four or more are $130. Senior passes for those 65 and older are $50, and single passes are $65.

Checks can be made payable to the City of Greenfield. Passes will be available throughout the season at the pool or at Greenfield City Hall.

“It’s always exciting when the pool has water in it and we’re getting closer,” Carns said. “We think we’ve got a great staff hired for the summer, and we’re really excited for a fun 2026 season for the community.”
