Joined by her parents, Elescia Clayton and Jerry Funke, as well as Southwestern Community College dance coach Paige Russo, Nodaway Valley senior Kenna Funke (middle) signs to dance next fall with the Spartans.

Nodaway Valley senior Kenna Funke will be dancing all the way to college next fall as she signed a National Letter of Intent last Friday to be a member of the dance team at Southwestern Community College.

Funke told photographer Dan Dickinson at her signing ceremony that she’s been dancing since she was 4, so going to college to dance was a no-brainer.

“I decided I didn’t want to quit dancing after I graduate high school,” Funke said. “It feels really good at this point.”

Funke has danced with two different studios and enjoys dancing with her teammate and fellow senior Kiara Stevens. Her favorite type of dance is clogging.

“My mom put me in dance at a really young age,” Funke said. “I’ve just liked it ever since.”

Funke, who plans to study human services, said she hopes moving on to dance in college will assist her in taking her skills to the next level so that she can continue improving.

The daughter of Eleisca Clayton and Jerry Funke, Kenna was also accompanied at the signing by SWCC head dance coach Paige Russo and her dance teacher at Dance Explosion in Afton, Kammie Huntington.
