LOGAN — Nodaway Valley’s dream of reaching the state duals tournament in Coralville was spoiled by big runs of multiple matches won by West Sioux in a regional semifinal last Tuesday at Logan-Magnolia’s new Panther Dome as the seventh-ranked Falcons advanced to the regional final with a 51-24 win.
The loss ended the dual season for the No. 16-ranked Wolverines. The senior class for the program, which includes Keyin Steeve, Ty Strode, Matthew Nelson and Ashton Honnold, finished their careers 77-12 with four regional duals appearances.
No. 7 Logan-Magnolia went on to defeat West Sioux, advancing to the state duals tournament, which was Saturday at Xtreme Arena in Coralville. The Panthers finished seventh.
“It was a rough night with cards stacked against us from the get go on, but there still are no excuses,” Nodaway Valley head wrestling coach Brad Honnold said.
Nodaway Valley took the first match of the night with a pin at 106 pounds from Josh Nelson over Ian DeBoom. Nelson drew first blood with a takedown for a 3-0 lead, then he added another takedown in the second period and a reversal in the third before he won with the pin.
The Wolverines lost the next four matches by a pin, a pair of forfeits and a decision to put the score at 21-6 after five weights.
A pin by Steeve at 138 stopped the run of Falcon scoring and got the Wolverines to within 21-12. Steeve’s pin of Zach Sabin came in 1:32 after he had gotten a takedown and four back points.
The Falcons followed that up by putting the dual away, taking the next five matches with three pins and two decisions and led 45-12 with three matches to go.
The Wolverines did finish strong, winning two of the final three weights, on a forfeit win by Caleb Christensen and a pin by Ashton Honnold at 285. Honnold notched four takedowns in less than a minute and a half before finishing the match early.
Don Bosco defeated Jesup 36-30 for the state title in Class 1A state duals, with Hinton topping Lake Mills 46-26 for third. Woodbury Central topped Oakland Riverside for fifth and Logan-Magnolia beat Nashua-Plainfield for seventh.
The Class 2A state duals champion was Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Southeast Polk won Class 3A.
