In the aftermath of the Greenfield tornado, the congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church had their Christmas nativity set destroyed. The congregational members unanimously voted to replace the nativity set. They commissioned Katrina Schulteis to do the original hand painting of the new nativity figures. Schuletis is a 2008 graduate of Nodaway Valley High School. She subsequently graduated from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, with a degree in graphic design. Her prior projects include the striking murals depicting the six days of creation in the new youth room at Immanuel.
Schulteis has completed the first set of nativity figures that are currently on display in the east church yard that faces Highway 25. The most notable figure is her beautiful painting of the Virgin Mary. She plans to add more figures to the nativity ensemble in subsequent years.
The nativity scene will be on display through the 12 days of Christmas. Visitors are invited to stroll through the church yard to get a closer look at the beautiful painting of the nativity set and take pictures.
