REDFIELD — The Wolverine cross country team ran their second meet of the season at West Central Valley Middle School last Thursday. The boys came away with a dominating team win and Nodaway Valley/OM swept the individual championships.
Sophomore boy Gabe Winkelmann was champion of the boys race, running an unofficial 17:24.85.
Luke Kading took third in the race despite the results listing him as fourth — he ran an 18:57.37.
Paul Kading was sixth in 19:16.11, Cherubim Mercado seventh in 19:17.05, Haden Colton eighth in 19:19.62, Josh Nelson ninth in 19:24.91, Everett Ehler 18th in 20:23.37, Cael Strode 22nd in 21:01.11, Trevyn Colton 25th in 22:38.22, Lincoln Van Horn 28th in 24:20.13 and Fynn Thompson 30th in 24:41.19.
The Wolverines scored 26 points with Woodward Academy second with 52, Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center third (71) and West Central Valley fourth (85).
“We did really well,” NV/OM head coach Brooke Wilson said. “I think we’re doing really great for this point in the season pack running, which is what we want them to do because that’s the best way to score the lowest. We want our boys to stay ranked so that when we get to districts we’re in a good place and have a better chance to make it to state that way.”
In a girls race that included only 10 entrants, NV/OM freshman Abby Nelson was champion in 22:40.36. Kaylee Van Horn placed seventh (26:50.86) and Kenzie Lilly ninth (31:11.80).
“Abby had a really good time,” Wilson said. “I thought that was really good for her. A good goal for her is to get into the 21s.
“It was a small meet, but I thought we did well,” Wilson said. “There were only five schools.”
Weather permitting, the Wolverines were scheduled to host their home meet Monday at Greenfield Golf and Country Club. Otherwise, they run this Thursday in Atlantic at Nishna Hills Golf Club. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Wolverines host the Pride of Iowa Conference Championships at the golf course. After that, only a Thursday meet at Mount Ayr remains in the regular season.
