Fire station components assembled off-site delivered last week

Project due for March 2026 finish

Greenfield’s new fire station along Highway 25 is on schedule to be finished in March 2026, city leaders said during the Tuesday, Sept. 23 city council meeting.

Workers prepped the ground for construction and have finished the early stages of construction facility.

The building structure, assembled off-site, was delivered last Thursday morning.

“That’s another thing people may not know: the building structure is being assembled partly off-site,” City Administrator Michelle Carns said. “We’re going to start seeing [progress].”

The council approved Graphite Construction as the general contractor for the fire station.

The new station will have south-facing truck bays like the old station and east-facing truck bays that allow direct access to Highway 25. It will include a meeting room, equipment room, hose tower for drying fire hose and more.

The first pay application directed toward the project was paid for by the city through last week’s meeting in the amount of $102,344.36. A large portion of this amount goes toward the planning phase of the build and the removal of existing concrete from the site.

Carns said she appreciated the format of Graphite’s pay application, which shows the total scope of the project and what work is already complete.

“We’re in a contract with Graphite for the specific amount of this building and for it to be done in March. The building should be constructed primarily by November, which was also part of the original agreement,” Carns said. “If for some reason it isn’t finished [in March], it will be incumbent upon them to pay a fee every day until it’s finished. We hope it doesn’t come to that, but they’re contractually obligated to do that. This is the No. 1 project for the City of Greenfield — there isn’t any project more important than this — so we’re watching this very, very closely.”

The fire department is currently housed in a leased quonset on the south side of town.

In other action, the council:

• approved a resolution adding signatories Michelle Carns and Jalene Sandin-Sivadge to bank accounts

• approved an amendment to the Jan. 24, 2023 engineering agreement with Strand Associates, Inc. for the second phase of sewer collection work, increasing not-to-exceed amounts from $47,000 to $74,000 and $115,200 to $142,200, extending the agreement to Dec. 31, 2028

• approved initiating recruitment for a full-time police officer with a tentative start date no later than Jan. 5, 2026
