FOOTBALL: AHSTW blanks Wolverines

Fast start helps Vikings in win at NV/OM

Wolverine senior Wyatt Boden blocks his man from AHSTW during Friday night's game.

The annual homecoming game at Nodaway Valley wasn’t anything how the Wolverines had hoped it would go.

From the opening kickoff to the final horn, NV/OM was outmatched by AHSTW in a 64-0 loss. The Wolverines and Vikings faced each other for the first time since 2019. Turnovers and mistakes snapping the ball multiple times, as well as untimely penalties, hurt the Wolverines’ efforts in the game.

NV/OM junior Bram Dahl (7) goes for a double-leg takedown of AHSTW's Gavin Gettler during last Friday's homecoming game.

Wolverine head coach Jack West said that he and his team are disappointed with last Friday’s game, but there is still half the season left and four remaining games means there is a lot of football left in the season.

“Things are never as bad as they seem and things are never as good as they seem,” West said. “We have another four weeks to play this game and we want to make it the best four we play as a team.”

West said that everyone has to get better this week as the Wolverines prepare for a week 5 road game — coaches and players included.

“We didn’t execute what we wanted to do at all last Friday. Monday’s practice will be important,” West said. “We have to get in the right spot to play this week and the next four weeks.”

NV/OM quarterback Titan Foster passed for 46 yards and five completions. Remington Woosley caught two passes for 31 yards. Eli Campbell, Caleb Christensen and Keyin Steeve all had receptions in the game. The Wolverines top rusher was Cassius Burnside with eight yards on nine carries and Mason Payne with eight yards on six carries. Six different Wolverines had a carry in the game.

Wolverine junior Caleb Christensen stiff arms an AHSTW tackler on a play during last Friday's homecoming game in Greenfield.

Defensively, Caleb Christensen led with five tackles while Logan Lantz and Bram Dahl each made two. Keyin Steeve had three kickoff returns totaling 77 yards.

AHSTW had only 217 yards of total offense in the game with 90 passing and 127 rushing.

Dayton Osbahr passed for 70 yards on three completions with two touchdown passes. Backup Camdyn Dresen also passed for a touchdown pass.

Eleven different Vikings had at least one carry in the game. Starters Gatlin Gettler and Drew Lee each rushed a team-high four times for 50 and 33 yards. Gettler rushed for a pair of scores and Lee also had a touchdown. Five different Vikings caught a pass and three different Vikings caught a touchdown pass.

The Vikings needed 16 seconds to score the first points of the ballgame after Kaxston Sheffield ran the opening kick-off back 65 yards for a touchdown. It was the first of 35 first-quarter points for AHSTW. The Vikings added touchdown runs from Chase Wheatley of 13 yards and Drew Lee of 6 yards, two safeties and a pair of Osbahr touchdown passes to Collin Harder for 34 yards and Wheatley for 33 yards to the total before the first break.

The 35-point running clock was activated early in the game as the Vikings led 50-0 at halftime.

AHSTW added two scoring runs in the second quarter as Lee rushed for his second score of 26 yards and Gatlin Gettler rushed for a 28 yard scoring run.

With the completion of the game, half of the 2025 season is now over. Through four games, NV/OM’s offense has 536 yards of total offense with 355 yards passing and 181 yards rushing. Last year at this time of the season, Nodaway Valley had 551 yards, but were 0-4 and outscored 183 to 34.

Riverside is the next foe for the Wolverines Friday. The Bulldogs began the season ranked No. 4 in Class A but have since fallen out of the rankings. They’ve won three straight games, all in district play. In any of those games, they have not scored fewer than 32 points.

“I honestly believe that our district has the two best running backs in Class A in Jaxon Gordon from Riverside and Joe Crawford from AC/GC,” West said.

West went on to say he feels Gordon, who leads Class A in rushing with 1,009 yards and is second in any class, is the best back in the state. He has 126 carries, 10 touchdowns and averages eight yards per carry.

“It will be exciting for our players to see that type of running back. We will have to really execute what we want to do defensively this week. Riverside does a good job blocking and running their offense. As a unit, you have to tackle and try to limit the big runs,” he said.

Riverside’s senior quarterback Landyn Schoenrock has passed for 330 yards on 30 completions with four touchdowns, also rushing for 99 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown. Junior Cole Jeppesen has rushed for 238 yards on 15 catches with three touchdowns. Defensively, the senior trio of Jack Branan, Wyatt Bell and Schoenrock lead in tackles with at least 13.5 each.
