Nodaway Valley/OM baseball came out on the short end of the stick in a pair of two-run games that made up the close to the regular season last week.
The Wolverines faced a road trip last Monday to Martensdale-St. Marys, went to Southeast Warren Tuesday and Southwest Valley Thursday.
Most recently, Southwest Valley beat the Wolverines 6-4. Despite tying the game at one apiece in the top of the fourth, the Wolverines found themselves down 5-1 in the home half of that inning as the Timberwolves (10-10) plated four. SWV extinguished a threat from the visitors in the seventh, when NV/OM scored three.
Remington Woosley was the team’s leader at the plate with two RBI on a 2-for-4 night while Bryan Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with two singles. Paul Berg doubled for a 1-for-3 night with an RBI. Other hits were by Titan Foster and Keyin Steeve.
In six innings pitched, Woosley threw 107 pitches, walking three, hitting one battler and giving up four earned runs while scattering 11 hits.
In a 7-5 loss to Southeast Warren, the Wolverines were able to keep the Warhawks (13-6) at bay, except for in the fifth inning, when they scored four times. Otherwise, they scored once in the first, second and sixth innings. All of NV/OM’s runs came in the last two stanzas.
NV/OM had six hits on the night, with singles by Foster, Steeve, Berg, Eli Harris, and Will Shilling, while Ty Strode doubled.
Manolis Galanakis pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out one. Shilling took the loss in 1 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run on two hits, walking one.
SEW senior left fielder Trey Fisher homered twice in the game.
NV/OM also faced Class 1A’s 10th-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys (27-5) on the road, losing 9-2. Despite managing seven hits on the night, the Blue Devils were too powerful at the plate and on the mound for the Wolverines to come away with the win.
Hits for the visitors included two from Foster — a single and a double — as well as two from Woosley and one each from Steeve, Berg and Gonzalez. Harris and Steeve had RBIs.
Strode took the loss on the hill with 4 1/3 innings pitched, scattering eight hits for six earned runs with six walks and two Ks. Shilling also pitched 1 2/3 innings.
Batting highlights for the Blue Devils include a double by senior Jason Fugate and a home run and 3 RBIs by junior Jack Gavin.
Nodaway Valley/OM (4-15, 2-12 in the Pride of Iowa) began district tournament action Saturday at Ogden against West Central Valley. However, inclement weather forced the game to be suspended. It was to be continued Monday with no outs in the bottom of the second inning and runners for West Central Valley on first and third.
