The NV Champions 4-H club decided they wanted to add to the handicap playground at Fontanelle City Park. They learned that adding sand diggers to the east side of the playground was part of the original plan; so, they wanted to try to continue that plan. They decided before the Greenfield tornado that they wanted to do this but was got put on hold. Last fall they decided they were going to do this again.
The club made a committee to research the project with Aby Scovel, Bonafacio Rubio III and Carlita Rubio. The club started by asking for the city council’s permission at one of their meetings. They gave the club permission to begin the project. The club did a lot of research and found a company that offered both a handicap-accessible digger and a matching traditional digger. The club wanted to do both projects so friends can play together. They applied for a grant from Empowering Adair County Foundation and received that grant, which led the club to being able to order the pieces and finish the project. May 30, club members poured the bases and put up snow fence so that not one would mess with it. On June 4, they came back and finished installation of the project.
“I’m glad that it went well and that a lot of our club was able to participate,” NV Champions Vice President Bonacafio Rubio III said.
Both sand diggers are set and free to use for the public. The club looks forward to many years of kids being able to have fun digging in the sand.
