The Nodaway Valley girls golf squad knew that it would be a long shot for them to advance, but the Wolverines gave it their best effort when they traveled to a Class 1A regional meet at Lenox Friday.
The Wolverines were fifth with a team score of 446. It was a mini Pride of Iowa Conference tournament, of sorts, as Mount Ayr, East Union, Southwest Valley and Lenox were all on the course with NV.
The conference champion Mount Ayr Raiderettes also won the regional with a 390. East Union was second with 392 and Southwest Valley finished two strokes over the Eagles in third.
Mount Ayr’s Jaylee Shaffer was the medalist at the meet with a score of 74, which included shooting a one-under 36 for the first nine holes and then shooting three over on the second nine holes. Griswold’s Joanna Reynolds was medalist runner-up with an 83.
Nodaway Valley was led by junior Mallory Russell with a score of 98. She was the only one from NV to go sub-100, firing a 47 on the first nine and a 51 on the second nine.
Other Nodaway Valley scores were Delaney Blomme 57-54 111, Taryn Gutierrez 65-53 118, Aleyah Pilgreen 61-58 119, Chloe Rardin 65-58 123 and Brailyann Coffman 59-67 126.
The Wolverines will return all but one player from this year’s team next year. Nodaway Valley graduates Blomme. Russell, Rardin and Coffmann return to lead the team as seniors.
