Residents and small business owners in Adair’s business districts learned more about a project that will impact them majorly over the summer and fall during an informational meeting last Wednesday.
Audubon Street, which is the main downtown street in Adair that goes east-west, will be replaced. Snyder and Associates and Caliber Concrete are major players in the project.
Adair Mayor Joanne Byars said the plan calls for the replacement of Audubon Street from White Pole Road, or Fifth Street, to 1st Street, which is in front of the grain elevator, Landus Cooperative. The street, sidewalks and storm drains will be removed and replaced. There will also be new lighting.
“The bricks are coming out. The city has sold those, but there will be some at a crosswalk on the one end,” Byars said.
The work is scheduled to last 100 working days with an expected end date of Oct. 1.
Various business leaders checked in with project officials, saying they have plans for accessing their building during the work. In some places, sidewalks will be left in place longer so accessibility for all is maintained, such as the post office and pharmacy.
Removal of the existing street will start at the co-op and move west. The street was expected to be closed this week on the eastern two blocks, then the western two blocks will close.
“We don’t want people walking out through the construction zone, so you’re going to see a lot of fence out there,” Jason Martin with Caliber Concrete said. “Please respect that.”
