GIRLS TRACK: Sprint medley wins for NV at Pride of Iowa meet

From left, coming together to win the sprint medley relay for Nodaway Valley were Maddie Weston, Izzy Eisbach, Annika Nelson and Emma Lundy.

The Nodaway Valley girls track and field team finished second at last week’s Pride of Iowa Conference meet in Mount Ayr. The Wolverines were second with 112 points as Wayne won the conference title with 126 points. Mount Ayr was third with 97 points and Central Decatur fourth with 93.5 points.

The Wolverines now turn their attention to the state qualifying meet. Monday, the Wolverines were to run at a meet at Pleasantville, but Thursday at Mount Ayr is the night that state bids will be earned.

The Wolverines won one event at the meet and were runners up in four others to help support their runner-up team finish.

The event win for the Wolverines came in the sprint medley relay. The lineup for the event was Maddie Weston, Izzy Eisbach, Annika Nelson and Emma Lundy, and the result was a time of 1:56.55. That lineup has only been together for a short time, and they have steadily been dropping time. The relay is within 0.16 of the Wolverines’ best time in the relay this season and that time was ran in early April.

The Wolverines’ 4x100-meter relay team continues to drop time ahead of the postseason. The Drake Relays-qualifying event placed second at POI with a season-best time of 51.29 with Grace Britten, Maddie Weston, Emma Lundy, and Annika Nelson. The relay currently sits fourth in Class 1A.

Senior Annika Nelson had a season-best time in the 100-meter hurdles. Nelson was the runner-up in a time of 16.65. Lundy also collected a season-best time in the 200, breaking the 27-second mark for the first time this year in a time of 26.87. Another senior, Jorja Holliday was the runner-up in the discus with a best throw of 94 feet, 7 inches. Holliday also collected a season-best distance in the shot put, placing third with a best throw of 33 feet.

Nelson and Lundy also captured top-3 finishes in the 100 and 400. Nelson was third in the 100 in 13.47 followed by teammate Maddie Weston in fourth in a time of 13.63. Lundy was third in the 400 in 1:04.32, followed by Eisbach in seventh in a season-best time of 1:07.95.

Eisbach added a pair of season-best times in the 800 and the 1,500 events. In the 800-meter run, Eisbach had a season-best time of 2:35.83 and placed fifth, and in the 1,500-meter run, she placed fourth in a season-best time of 5:29.98.

In distance events, junior Jazz Christensen just missed a top-5 finish in the 1,500 and 3,000. She placed sixth in the 3,000 in 12:55.46 and turned in a season-best time in the 1,500 to place seventh in 5:44.72.

Other Wolverine top-10 finishers were Grace Britten in the shot put, Ashlyn Lund in the discus, Maddie Weston in the 200-meter dash, and the Wolverines 4x200, 4x400, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relay events.

The state qualifying meet begins at 4 p.m. Thursday. There will be a 30-minute break after the 4x800-meter relay event. Teams joining the Wolverines at the meet are Diagonal, East Union, Lamoni, Martensdale-St. Marys, Moravia, Mormon Trail, Moulton-Udell, Mount Ayr, Murray, Seymour, SE Warren, Stanton, and Wayne. The top place winner in each event, plus the next 14 best performances statewide, will advance to the state meet. The state track and field meet this year is May 16-18 in Des Moines.
