The Orient-Macksburg boys track and field team competed on back-to-back nights last week, getting in both scheduled meets. The Bulldogs were in Afton on Monday, April 8, and at the Central Decatur co-ed a day later, on April 9 in Leon. The program used both outings for learning and an opportunity to get better.
The two meets were the first two of the season for O-M, which had meets at Bedford, Nodaway Valley and Lenox canceled in the first weeks of the season.
Competing with a partial team at East Union due to sickness decimimating their usual lineup, that didn’t deter Orient-Macksburg, however, from giving it their all in their first outdoor meet. The Bulldogs competed in four combined events.
Braxton Weeks had the top O-M finish with a 12th place finish in the long jump. Weeks had a best jump of 11 feet, 9 1/4 inches. He also placed 18th in the 100-meter dash. Patrick
Patrick Fletchall collected a pair of top-15 finishes in the field events. He placed 13th in the shot put with a best throw of 26 feet, 3 1/4 inches. He was also 15th in discus with a best toss of 68 feet, 7 inches.
Lenox won the meet with a team score of 139 followed by fellow Pride of Iowa Conference members Bedford second with 110 points and East Union third with 81 points.
The next night O-M traveled to Leon for the Central Decatur co-ed, where the Bulldogs would capture three top 10 finishes and place ninth in the team standings. Des Moines’ North High won the meet with a team score of 179 while Interstate 35 claimed second with 128.
Izzy Pierce had the top O-M finish at the meet with a fifth place finish in the shot put. Pierce had a best throw of 36 feet, 2 1/4 inches to get in the top five places. Pierce also placed 13th in discus with a throw of 74 feet, 10 inches.
Andreas Pierce had two top 10 finishes, taking ninth in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.24 and 10th in the long jump with a best jump of 15 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Blaise Fry, Braxton Week, Mason Payne, and Patrick Fletchall each had top-20 finishes at the meet.
“Our goal was to get times and distances in. It was a hard start to the season. We were registered for three meets, and they were canceled due to weather. Now, we are getting to the mid-part of the season and we have some kids that have only ran in one meet,” O-M co-head coach Becca Ross said.
“We needed this meet to get our options in for future relay events,” Ross added. “We now have everyone with a time in their distance, so we can really start to plan what we want to do.”
