BOYS TRACK: Warmer days a good sign for NV boys

NV's Trent Warner throws the shot put during a recent track meet at Earlham.

A pair of wins from junior thrower Trent Warner and a host of other performances has the Nodaway Valley boys track team, which is small in number but mighty in effort, feeling good about where they’re at in the first part of the season.

In addition to Warner’s golds, nine entries recorded season best performances. Nodaway Valley placed eighth in the meet with 36 points as one of 10 teams that scored in the meet. Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center won the meet with a team score of 157.5 while Earlham and South Hamilton also topped the 100-point mark with 102 and 101 points.

“We are getting there. We are at the point of the season where we are looking at where and what events we can get kids to state in,” said Wolverine coach Chase Green. “We have had a good spring so far. I am sure glad that we are going to see these 80-degree days. It’s nice that they can compete on these nice days, and it’s good for the fans too.

The shot put and discus events both went to Warner. His top throws in each were season bests. He won shot put with a best throw of 47 feet, 11 1/2 inches, which is second-best in the Pride of Iowa Conference to date. Warner’s best throw in discus was 132 feet, 1 inch. Looking at the conference, that is fourth-best right now. Ashton Honnold also placed sixth in the discus with a best throw of 114 feet, 1 inch.

The best finish for an individual running event was Eli Harris in fifth place in the 400-meter dash in 58.64.

The Wolverines had six season-best times in running events. Haden Colton was ninth in the 200-meter dash in 25.88 and Luke Kading was ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:21.60, both season-best times.

Kaden Stonehocker had a 19th place finish in the 100-meter dash in 14.19 and a 12th place finish in the 1,600-meter run in 6:25.41. Both of those times were a season-best for him.

Also collecting season-best times were Avery Lewis with a 15th place finish in 1:06.98 in the 400-meter dash and Landon LaBarge with a 17th place finish in the 800-meter run in 3:07.0.

The best relay finish for Nodaway Valley was their 4x800-meter relay team. The team of Ashton Honnold, Haden Colton, Luke Kading, and Eli Harris was fourth in 9:29.66.

The Wolverines 4x400-meter relay team of Colton, Honnold, Kading, and Harris set a new season-best time in that event in 3:55.59.
