GIRLS TRACK: 4x100 gold paces NV at Earlham early bird

Nodaway Valley's Maddie Weston (right) takes the baton from Izzy Eisbach in a relay race in Earlham Thursday, March 28.

The Nodaway Valley girls track and field team had to wait two extra days to get their first outdoor meet in last week. The first meet, scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, was canceled at Bedford due to weather. The first meet for the Wolverines turned out to be the Earlham co-ed last Thursday. Windy conditions and later colder conditions gave Nodaway Valley an early challenge.

At the meet, the Wolverines won one relay event, the 4x100-meter relay, and three individual events.

The Wolverines won the 4X100-meter relay event with the team of Grace Britten, Maddie Weston, Emma Lundy, and Annika Nelson in a time of 52.08. That time is currently the top time in the Pride of Iowa Conference through the first week of the season.

“We stacked the 4x1 for this meet and got a good result,” said Wolverine head coach Brett Welsch. “We were over a second faster in the event last week than we were in the event at this time last year. I am happy with where we are and how we did last week. I am hoping to get our home meet in (Monday, April 1) and get both our meets in next week.”

Nodaway Valley won three individual events between seniors Emma Lundy and Annika Nelson. Lundy won a pair of individual events, taking the 200-meter dash in 27.04 and the 400-meter dash in 1:03.47. Lundy’s 200 dash time is the fourth best Class 1A time in the event through the first week. Lundy’s 400-meter dash time is 15th in 1A as well.

Nelson won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.05. Allie Cornelison was sixth in 18.75. Nelson’s time is currently fourth in Class 1A through the first week of action.

“I wanted to see Emma compete at this meet and she did. I thought she could win the 200, but the runners had a stiff straight-away headwind, and that showed in times,” Welsch said. “Annika had a good race in the 100 hurdles, three-stepping seven of the hurdles and turning in a good time.”

In field events, the six athletes for the Wolverines captured a top-10 finish with all finishers placing in the top-15. Senior Jorja Holliday was runner-up in the discus with a best throw of 106 feet, and placed third in the shot put with a best throw of 32 feet, 6 inches.

Grace Britten placed sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus. Addison Glade also was fifth in the long jump with a best jump of 14 feet, 4 inches. Ashlyn Lund placed ninth in the discus and 13th in the shot put.

In other individual events, Nelson placed third in the 100-meter dash in 13.42 and Maddie Weston placed fourth in 13.57. Megan McCall and Jazz Christensen each had a top-10 finish in the mid-distance events. McCall was ninth in the 800-meter run and 10th in the 1,500-meter run while Christensen was ninth in the 1,500-meter run and 11th in the 800-meter run.

The Wolverines’ other relay finishes were the 4x200-meter relay, which took fourth, and the 4X400-meter and 4X800-meter relay events, which were each fifth.

The Wolverines will be back on the track on Thursday, April 4 at the Woodward-Granger co-ed track meet.
