BOYS TRACK: Five season bests set by Wolverines at Earlham

Nodaway Valley's Luke Kading gets the baton from Ashton Honnold during the Wolverines' 4x400-meter relay Thursday night in Earlham. The Wolverines placed ninth in the race in 4:01.48.

The Nodaway Valley boys’ track team began their outdoor schedule last Thursday when they traveled to Earlham for a 10-team non-scoring meet. Of the 10 schools there, four were from the Pride of Iowa Conference — Lenox, Martensdale-St. Marys and Mount Ayr being the other three. The Wolverines’ first meet of the season, Tuesday, March 26 at Bedford, was canceled due to cold weather conditions.

Five of the nine events had a Wolverine best time this year. Part was that this meet had events that were not run indoors, and part were new best times.

Nodaway Valley had three events place in the top 5 and the Wolverines had nine top-10 finishes as a team.

The top Wolverine finishes came from field events. Trent Warner was runner-up in the shot put with a best throw of 43 feet, 3/4 inch and was fifth in the discus with a best throw of 120 feet, 5 inches. Ashton Honnold added a third-place finish in the discus with a best throw of 120 feet, 7 inches. After last week, Honnold and Warner sit 1-2 in the POI in the discus and Warner is currently second in the POI going into meets during the week beginning Monday, April 1.

The top relay finish for Nodaway Valley at Earlham came in the 4x800-meter relay with a fifth-place finish in 9:28.44. That time, with the team of Honnold, Haden Colton, Luke Kading and Eli Harris, is the second fastest right now in the POI. The Wolverines also placed in the top-10 in the 4x400-meter relay with a ninth-place finish. The team of Honnold, Colton, Kading and Harris finished the race in a time of 4:01.48.

Other top-10 finishes came from Honnold and Eli Harris in the 200-meter dash with eighth and ninth place finishes, along with Luke Kading in the 1,600-meter run with a ninth place finish. Kading’s time is the fifth best in the POI currently.

Avery Lewis and Kaden Stonehocker turned in season-best times in the 100-meter dash, Eli Harris did the same in the 400-meter dash, and Colton, Lewis, and Stonehocker all had best times in the 800-meter run event.

The Wolverines were to run twice this week. Weather permitting, Nodaway Valley was to host a co-ed meet Monday and will travel to Woodward-Granger Thursday. Teams at the W-G Co-Ed are Bondurant-Farrar, Des Moines Christian, Perry, Saydel, Southeast Valley, Woodward Academy and Woodward-Granger. The Wolverines will go back to Earlham April 9 for another meet.
