GIRLS TRACK: Two top POI teams duke it out indoors at Graceland

Two of the top Pride of Iowa Conference girls track teams slugged it out at the Graceland Indoor track meet Friday, March 22 with both Nodaway Valley and Wayne finishing second in an 11-team meet.

The Wolverines and Falcons were two of the three POI teams at the meet and both squads collected 65 team points.

Newton won the meet with a team score of 72 points. Central Decatur placed fourth with 53 points.

The Wolverines won three events at the indoor meet at Graceland with two individual and one relay events claiming first place.

Seniors Annika Nelson and Emma Lundy each won individual events and were on the Wolverines’ 4x200-meter relay winner. Individually, Nelson won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.06 and Lundy won the 200-meter dash in 27.84. The 4x200 relay team of Maddie Weston, Lindsey Davis, Nelson and Lundy won that event in a time of 2:10.94.

In field events, the Wolverines got fourth place finishes from Addison Glade in the long jump and Jorja Holliday in the shot put. Glade had a best jump of 14 feet, 4 1/2 inches while Holliday had a best throw of 33 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

Nodaway Valley was able to collect two other placewinners in a couple of events. Davis joined Lundy in the top-10 in the 200-meter dash with a sixth place finish in 30 seconds.Annika Nelson placed third in the 55-meter dash in 7.78 while Weston was close behind in 5th place in 7.86.

The Wolverines also had top-10 individual finishes from Joanna Larson, who was ninth in the 400-meter dash, and Kylie Nelson, who was 10th in the 800-meter run.

The Wolverines’ other three relays all finished in the top-10 including a top-3 finish for their 4X400-meter relay team of Weston, Davis, Lundy and Nelzon.

The outdoor season kicks off this week for Nodaway Valley as the outdoor season opener was scheduled for Tuesday, March 26 at Bedford, but at the time of this printing, weather was a concern. The Wolverines will be back in action Monday, April 1 when they run at home for the annual NV Co-Ed track meet. Schools coming in are Bedford, CAM, East Union, Exira-EHK, Interstate 35, Martensdale-St. Marys, Orient-Macksburg, Treynor and West Central Valley.
