Two silvers lead Wolverine girls indoors at ISU

The indoor track and field meet season began for the Nodaway Valley Wolverines last week at the IATC indoor meet championships at Iowa State University. The Wolverines captured a pair of runner-up finishes, part of seven top-10 event finishes at the meet.

The Wolverines’ 4x100-meter relay team of Grace Britten, Maddie Weston, Emma Lundy and Annika Nelson placed second in 52.36 running out of the fourth heat in lane seven. Lisbon won the event in 52.20, narrowly beating the Wolverines.

Senior Annika Nelson was runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.75. Nelson was seventh in the prelims in 10.33 and improved in the finals as Lindsey Moore from Northwood-Kensett was the only runner to beat her, winning the event in 9.47. Nelson also collected two other top-10 finishes, a seventh place finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.21 and a ninth place finish in the 200-meter dash in 28.13.

Senior Emma Lundy placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.30. Lundy ran out of the third heat in lane seven. Aleksys Gannon from Murray won the event in 25.98.Emma Cooper from Southwest Valley was fifth in 27.53.

Maddie Weston collected the Wolverines’ other top-10 finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.32. The feat was impressive as Weston ran out of the first heat of seven in lane five, meaning 48 other runners ran after her in the event. Gannon won the event in 8.01.

The Wolverines ran out of lane eight in the final heat of the spring medley relay, placing fourth in 2:00.52. The team of Weston, Izzy Eisbach, Lindsey Davis, and Lundy made up the team that will likely break the two-minute mark soon. Lisbon won the event in 1:55.82 followed by Don Bosco and Council Bluffs St. Albert. Lenox placed sixth and was the only other POI team in the event.

The Wolverines’ 4x400-meter relay team of Eisbach, Joanna Larson, Davis and Lundy just missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th in 4:30.56. Oakland Riverside won the event in 4:17.08.

The Wolverines also had some athletes compete in a couple of field events. Seniors Jorja Holliday placed 12th and Grace Britten 18th in the shot put. Holliday had a top throw of 31-03.75 and Britten 29-09.25. Freshman Addison Glade placed 18th in the long jump with a best jump of 13-11.75.

The Wolverines will run at an indoor meet at Northwest Missouri State Saturday in Maryville, Missouri.
