Nodaway Valley sends two boys track entries to IATC indoor

The Nodaway Valley boys track and field team sent a handful of events to the IATC indoor championship meet in Ames last week. There, the Wolverines came away with some positives to build on as the outdoor season is just around the corner.

The Wolverines had two events compete at the meet. They were the distance medley relay team of Avery Lewis, Trent Warner, Eli Harris, and Ashton Honnold, and also Trent Warner in the shot put.

Warner placed fifth in the shot put with a best throw of 45 feet, 8 inches. He was one of 36 competitors in the event. Warner threw in the third heat of three in the event. In the preliminary throws, Warner had throws of 43-06.5, 45-01.5, and 45-8.75. It was the last throw that qualified him for the finals. In the finals, Warner fouled on his first throw. His second throw was 43-09.25 and his third throw, 45-2.75. Thus his finals qualifying throw was his best and was good for a top-5 finish. There were six other POI throwers at the meet, the best coming from Mount Ayr, East Union, and Southeast Warren. East Union’s Morgan Cooley placed third with a best throw of 51-0.5. North Cedar’s Ethan Thimmes won the event with a top throw of 53-09.25, his first throw of the six he attempted.

The Wolverines distance medley relay team was seeded 24th and placed 20th in a time of 4:19.70. Though early in the season and not many meets have been completed, the Wolverines’ time was good for 43rd in the nation at the time of the meet.

Other POI teams that ran in the event were Southeast Warren, East Union, and Mount Ayr. Lisbon won the event in a time of 3:40.45 followed by Oakland Riverside in 3:44.73.

“I have hopes and I want to help them to find their niche and do well in their niche. I want them to do well in their events and work hard,” said NV boys coach Chase Green.

The Wolverines will run at an indoor meet Saturday at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri followed by a meet at Graceland March 23.
