Nodaway Valley came out in third place when the dust settled on the Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center volleyball tournament Saturday, Sept. 16 at Guthrie Center.

The Wolverines played five matches. Head coach McKynli Newbury commented that strong team play and togetherness are what led her team to the three victories they had on the day.

Wins came against Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton, Perry and West Central Valley. Losses were to ACGC and Glidden-Ralston.

Against Exira-EHK, the Spartans took the first set 21-14, but NV roared back to win 21-15 and 15-12 in the next two. The Wolverines defeated Perry 21-8, 21-16. Set scores for the WCV match were unavailable by press time.

Glidden-Ralston beat Nodaway Valley 21-11, 21-19 and ACGC took a competitive match against the Wolverines 22-20 and 21-19.

“I think we played really well together and played some good competition,” Newbury said. “We showed up, did our best and came out third place overall.”

Glidden-Ralston beat ACGC in three sets to win the tournament championship, with the Chargers placing second.

The Wolverines (7-9) were set to continue their long stretch of matches away from home this week, traveling Tuesday, Sept. 19 to Bedford and next Tuesday, Sept. 26 to play Grand View Christian at Des Moines North’s gym. Saturday, Sept. 30 they play at the Greene County Tournament.

They’re back home Tuesday, Oct. 3 for a match against Lenox, which will be Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Out Night as well as Senior Night. Newbury commented the team is looking forward to being home one last time for this season.
