About four weeks into the season at the Greenfield Swimming Pool, manager Meridith Johnston reports things have gone very well.
“At first it was a lot of work. There were a lot of new people and it was kind of chaotic,” Johnston told the newspaper over the phone late last week. “Now everyone’s getting the hang of it and it’s going a lot smoother on the staff side of things. There also haven’t been a whole lot of issues with kids or parents this year.”
Johnston said consistency in all aspects, as well as good communication from all involved, has helped there be minimal issues. The pool has also stayed open on days where there is low attendance, which has almost always turned out to be a benefit. On more than one occasion, groups came to swim and bought concessions, giving the pool revenue despite the low attendance.
“The staff has communicated well together and has been enforcing the rules,” Johnston said. “A lot of people have also told me that having an adult there to really make sure everyone’s enforcing the rules [has been beneficial]. I stop up there often and am there for quite awhile when I am there.”
The pool season began with approximately 10 lifeguards, but that number has only grown as the season has gone on. Johnston reports a total staff of 20 people has been instrumental in how well things have gone.
A Mermaid Princess Pool Party is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30. Spots are filling up quickly for the event but are still available by stopping at the pool or by paying through Venmo. A QR code to sign up is available on the pool’s Facebook page. Proceeds for the event, which costs $15 per children or adult, will go toward smaller everyday expenses the staff has throughout this and upcoming seasons. There is a maximum of about 180 persons for the event, and already over 60 have signed up.
“It’s something we haven’t ever thought of doing here,” Johnston said. “It has been a good turnout so far and it’s only [early on]. "
