Wolverine track teams weather tough competition at Earlham

Nodaway Valley’s track teams tested themselves Tuesday, April 11 in a tough field of teams and individuals from bigger schools in coed meet at Earlham.

The Wolverines amassed 84 points on the girls’ side of the meet to place fourth, behind champion Gilbert (112), runner-up Van Meter (102) and third-place Earlham (87).

On the boys’ side, Nodaway Valley was eight, with 41 points. Des Moines Christian (153.5), Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center (134) and Earlham (95.5) claimed the top three spots in the team race.

Three event wins and two silver finishes led the girls team on the night, which featured pristine weather conditions for a meet.

Maddie Weston, Abby Engles, Emma Lundy and Annika Nelson came together for a win late in the evening in the 4x100-meter relay. To start the night, thrower Jorja Holliday took home gold in the shot put. Annika Nelson also won the 100-meter hurdles.

Finishing second from the girls’ team was Weston, Engles, Annika Nelson and Lundy in the sprint medley and Holliday in the discus.

Blake Lund was runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles. Doug Berg placed second in the 1,600 meters and was the anchor runner for the distance medley that also placed second (Avery Phillippi, Ben Hoover, Blake Lund and Berg).

The Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center boys were second in the team standings behind Austin Kunkle’s win in the 100 and 200, Justin Reinhart’s win in the 1,600, Lance Bunde’s high jump and Payton Jacobe’s shot put. The highest finish for the Charger girls was their 4x100-meter relay, which took second.

The West Central Valley girls had Kinsey Alt win the long jump. Their 4x200 was also first. On the boys’ side, Braiden Beane was champion of the 400 and Landon Osberg of the long jump.
