Event Briefs for week of Wednesday, Nov. 30

Orient library candy sale Saturday, Dec. 3

Mark your calendars! The annual candy sale, sponsored by the Orient Community Library Friends, will be held once again this year from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Farmers & Merchants Bank meeting room in Orient. Delicious homemade candy made by local cooks will be offered. There will be mixed boxes with an assortment of candies along with boxes with one kind of candy. Enter the Candy Sale through the rear door on the west side of the bank building. All candy has been boxed in advance in half and one pound boxes for you to purchase. Thank you for supporting the Orient Community Library!

Upcoming Christmas season activities

Christmas-themed activities continue in various communities around the area this weekend.

• In Greenfield, the Tour of Trees, Chocolate Affair Extraordinaire and Holiday Luncheon will be held at the Warren Cultural Center. The tree tour and chocolate will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the luncheon at noon. The luncheon and trees are sponsored by the Adair County Hospital Auxiliary, the chocolate affair is sponsored by the Greenfield Business Women, and Holiday Gift Baskets and Silent Auction by Greenfield Chamber/Main Street.

• A Winter Fair Fest will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Adair County Fairgrounds 4-H/FFA Center, sponsored by the Fair Board. With kids games, a gift-wrapping station, visits with Santa and more, this event is designed for the whole family, and the family pets.

• Stuart’s first annual Christmas at the Depot will be Sunday, Dec. 4. From 3 to 5 p.m. children are invited to enjoy an ornament craft. Santa visits will be from 5 to 6 p.m. with the lighting of the community Christmas Tree at 6 p.m. After that will be a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” with cookies, hot cocoa and apple cider served.

• In Fontanelle Sunday, Dec. 4, the Lion’s Club will serve free hot chocolate and popcorn in the city park from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive and light the park at approximately 6 p.m. The Lion’s Club hopes to debut the refurbished Lion’s Club train at the event.

• The Fontanelle Lion’s Club and Enterprise Club will hold a pancake day 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire station Saturday, Dec. 10, with visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the community building from 11:30 to 1 p.m.

• The Fontanelle Public Library will hold a story hour with a holiday theme Wednesday, Dec. 7. They will have kids shopping times available by appointment from Dec. 16, 17 and 21 for kids 12 and under. Call 641-745-4981 to secure a time slot.

• Santa Claus will visit Orient 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the fire station. Children are welcome to come and share with him their Christmas wishes. A community drawing and soup supper will follow.

Fontanelle special election Dec. 13

The City of Fontanelle special election will be Tuesday, December 13, 2022. The Adair County Auditor’s Office released six names that will be on the ballot vying for three spots. They include Carol M. Barrett, Dawn Brown, James L. Campbell, Lane A. Ellis, Dianna Goetz and Jeffery Ivan Thompson. See coverage introducing each of the candidates in next week’s edition of the newspapers.

Voter pre-registration deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28. Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot.

Voters who are not pre-registered, such as voters registering to vote on election day and voters changing precincts, must also provide proof of residence.

A voter who is unable to provide an approved form of identification (or prove residence if required) 1) may have the voter’s identity/residence attested to by another registered voter in the precinct, 2) prove identity and residence using Election Day Registration documents, or 3) cast a provisional ballot and provide proof of identity/residence at the county auditor’s office by noon Dec. 19. Election Day Registrant attesters must provide an approved form of identification. Voters may request an absentee ballot from the Auditor’s Office. Voters may vote in the office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning Nov. 23, 2022, or they may request a ballot be mailed to them. The deadline to request an absentee ballot be mailed is 5 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2022. The last day to vote absentee in the Auditor’s Office is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12. Polls will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day December 13, 2022.

Nodaway Valley musicians featured in upcoming concerts

Nodaway Valley High School and Nodaway Valley Middle School will each hold music concerts ahead of the holiday season.

The middle school concert will be 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5 at the middle school. The high school concert will be 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12 at the high school.

The band and choirs for each level will be featured in these concerts.
